13 Long Beach State Student-Athletes Qualify for NCAA West Regionals

The Beach had 13 different athletes post 18 different qualifying marks for the NCAA Postseason.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Coming off the Big West Championships, Long Beach State will have 13 student-athletes compete in the NCAA West Regionals next week. The group consists of four women's athletes in four events and nine men's athletes qualifying in nine events.

The biggest standout of all the Beach qualifiers is Jason Smith, who qualified for the NCAA Regionals in men's Long Jump, High Jump, and Triple Jump. This is the fourth year he has qualified in Long Jump, third in High Jump, and first in Triple Jump. He is just the 12th athlete in program history to qualify for the Regionals in four different years. He ranks 8th in the West for Long Jump, 24th in High Jump, and 29th in Triple Jump.
The trio of Sebastian Coleman, Charlie Vernoy, and Alec Jones all qualified in two events for the Regionals with high marks in men's Discus and Hammer. For Coleman and Vernoy, it is their third time qualifying in Discus and first time in Hammer while it is the second time in Discus for Jones and first in Hammer. Jones leads the three in Discus, ranking 9th in the region while Coleman (11th) and Vernoy (13th) are not far behind. In Hammer, Coleman leads the group in 20th with Vernoy in 31st and Jones in 35th. As a group, the Beach ranks second in all of NCAA for their Discus and Hammer Throwers, per the USTFCCCA.
Marcos Gonzalez, the fourth thrower for the Beach, qualified for the Regionals after a tremendous Big West title-winning throw in men's Javelin. His throw of 232-5 at the conference championships moved him into the top ten in the West Region to qualify for the second Regionals of his career.
The men will also represent the Beach on the track for the first time since 2019. The first is Big West 1500m winner, Michael Phillips, after posting a school record of 3:41.08 this season, good for the 25th best time in the West Region. Also, qualifying is Mohammed Mohamed in the 800m with a time of 1:48.89. The last time Long Beach State had an athlete qualify in the men's 800m was Chris Low in the 2015 season.
The final track athlete for Long Beach State men is Joseph Anderson in the 110m Hurdles. Despite missing the conference championships, the junior transfer posted a 13.98 in the event to qualify for the second Regionals of his collegiate career.
The women's team will have four representatives make the trip to Fayetteville next week. On the track, Rahni Turner will be competing in the 100m Hurdles after posting a 13.48 this season. The freshman ranks 36th among the West qualifiers and is the first Beach sprinter to qualify in the event since Riley Cooks in 2016.
Also on the track is the Big West Women's Track Athlete of the Meet, Ryley Fick. The junior distance runner posted the school record in the 3000m Steeplechase with a time of 10:21.59. A two-event Big West title winner, she is the first women's distance runner to qualify since the 2013 season with the 40th best time in the region.
Out on the field, school record holder Crystal Washington qualified for the women's Triple Jump Regionals. Her season-best was 42-3.25 and defended her Big West title for back-to-back championships in the event, ranking her 30th in the West.
The final qualifier is Imani Carmouche who jumped her way into the Regionals at the conference championships last weekend. Clearing the bar at 5-11.5, she ranks tied for 11th in the region setting her up for the first NCAA Regionals appearance of her career.
