Long Beach State had two more track and field athletes earn conference weekly honors.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – After a fantastic weekend at the Hayward Premiere in Oregon, the Beach saw two more athletes garner Big West Conference weekly honors. Mohammed Mohamed was named the Big West Men's Track Athlete of the Week while Jason Smith earned Big West Men's Field Athlete of the Week.
Smith competed twice in Eugene, claiming a pair of victories in men's Long Jump and High Jump. In Friday's Long Jump, he posted a mark of 7.69m (25-2.75) on his way to winning the event by almost two feet and followed it with a clearance of 2.13m (6-11.75) for the win in the High Jump on Saturday. Both jumps were season-bests for the program record holder and set new meet records for the Hayward Premiere. The San Bruno native is now a perfect three-for-three when competing in jumps this season.
The fifth year currently ranks first in the conference for Long Jump and second in High Jump. Both marks also rank in the nation's top 25 so far this season.
Mohamed ran the best race of his career in Saturday's 800m Run. Crossing the line in first place, his time of 1:48.89 set a new lifetime-best and moved him into fifth on Long Beach State's all-time list. It marks back-to-back victories for the junior as he has improved on his collegiate best times each weekend.
The Riverside native currently sits atop the Big West performance list in the men's 800m and ranks 12th in the entire NCAA.
It is Smith's third time earning Big West Athlete of the Week honors in his career and the first for Mohamed. Overall, the Beach has now earned eight weekly awards this season, the most for the program since 2016.
