LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State has announced that Liana Marin has been hired as the university's new Student-Athlete Development Coordinator. The wide-ranging role is one that has significant impact with Long Beach State's student-athletes.
In their new position at Long Beach State, Marin will implement NCAA and Big West student-athlete development programming and initiatives focused on key areas including professional development, career development, self-discovery initiatives, leadership development, life-skills, and wellness education for student-athletes based on their unique needs.
"Along with the Division of Student Affairs, Athletics is excited to welcome Liana Marin into the Beach Family," said Senior Athletics Director Tiffany Edlin. "Liana's passion and positive energy will contribute greatly to cultivating leaders and champions, and I truly feel all of our lives will be enriched by having them on our team."
Additionally, Marin serves as the lead of two vital groups within the athletic department, helping to guide the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee as well as chairing the Diversity and Inclusion committee. In those roles, Marin will work closely with student-athlete leadership as well as coaches and administration to help build and maintain an outstanding environment to help best create positive student-athlete experiences.
Marin will also coordinate with the Bickerstaff Academic Center and Division of Student Affairs to provide resources to support our student-athletes outside of competition. Working with Long Beach State coaches and administration, Marin will also develop and implement community service, civic engagement and campus involvement opportunities to help create a holistic college experience for Beach student-athletes.
"I am excited to utilize my platform to provide opportunities where student-athletes are empowered to build connections and grow as leaders," said Marin. "I am committed to advocating for the needs of student-athletes through an equity lens and collaborating with campus stakeholders to provide an impactful and holistic student experience."
A graduate of San Diego State, Marin was actively involved in leadership throughout their time as a student, serving as chapter president of the women's fraternity, Alpha Gamma Delta, the vice president of Active Minds, an organization dedicated to outreach for mental health, and attending the SDSU leadership summit as part of the Student Advisory Board for three years.
Marin also worked with various campus organizations, serving as a peer educator, commuter life mentor, and admissions representative across San Diego State prior to graduation.
While pursuing a Master's Degree in Postsecondary Administration Student Affairs at USC, she spent a year working as a graduate advisor for campus activities, and then first entered the athletics sphere, working as an assistant learning specialist for Student-Athlete Academic Services with the Trojans.
Continuing on-campus work, most recently Marin has spent the last year serving as a violence prevention educator at USC while working as a leadership development officer as part of ASI at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
