Softball Wins Against the Co-Hosts Again To Leave San Diego With Three Wins

3/5/2022 9:42:00 PM | Softball

The Beach lost in extra innings against Stony Brook before defeating San Diego State.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Naomi Hernandez played a role in both runs in support of a complete game from Sophia Fernandez as Long Beach State won 2-1 against the San Diego Classic co-hosts, San Diego State, to earn a split on Saturday and leave the tournament with a 3-1 record.

Samantha Fowler had one of her best starts of the season in the opening game of the day, but Stony Brook (7-2) finally broke through in the eighth inning to steal the first game from the Beach in extras.

Long Beach State (8-10) struck first in the pitcher's duel, as Marissa Caballero doubled to start the inning, and then traded places with Naomi Hernandez who also doubled against Dawn Bodrug to give the Beach a 1-0 lead.

Stony Brook got on the board courtesy of a single hit in the sixth inning. A hit batter and a walk put a runner in scoring position, and a single to center field from Lindsey Osmer scored Kyra McFarland to tie the game at 1-1.

That's where the game would stand through seven innings. Fowler struck out the first batter she faced to start the eighth inning, but after a walk and two hit batters brought home one run, a single by Nicole McCarvill scored two more to make the score 4-1.

The Beach followed with a single from Sara Olson and a sacrifice fly to score their placed runner, but Bodrug was able to get out of the inning with no further damage to improve to 4-0 on the season. Fowler also ended up pitching all eight innings for a complete game and finished with five strikeouts in the loss.

In the second game, Long Beach State took an early lead and held off San Diego State (12-8) behind a strong pitching performance from Fernandez. The sophomore went the distance and struck out four while allowing just one run.

The Beach meanwhile picked up a pair in support. Naomi Hernandez kicked off the third inning with a single, and then came home to score on a two-out hit from Kyra Snyder. The senior then returned the favor the next inning, as Jacqueline Bickar singled to get on base in front of Hernandez, who doubled to center field to make the score 2-0. The Aztecs scored in the bottom of the fourth, but a timely strikeout from Fernandez ended the threat.

Long Beach State will make their home debut next week, hosting the Louisville Slugger Invitational at the LBSU Softball Complex starting on Thursday, March 10. The Beach will play five games, starting with Boston U on Thursday at 2:30 p.m.
