Dan Monson Wins 400th Career Win As Beach Drops Cal State Fullerton To Move Atop Big West

Long Beach State outscored Cal State Fullerton by 15 in the second half to break the tie at the top of the league standings.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – In front of a raucous crowd inside the Walter Pyramid, Long Beach State Men's Basketball extended the winning streak to nine games with a thrilling 71-61 win over Cal State Fullerton. In the process, Long Beach State head coach Dan Monson claimed his 400th career win and the Beach snapped the tie at the top of the league standings with Cal State Fullerton.

Colin Slater led four players for Long Beach State (13-9, 8-1 Big West) in double-figures the senior leadership came through in the end of the day for the Beach.

Cal State Fullerton (14-7, 7-2 Big West) had broken a tie at 16-16 with a 13-2 run to threaten the festive atmosphere inside of the home court of the Beach, but Joel Murray canned a three in the final minutes to stem the tide. A 5-0 run to close out the half helped Long Beach State turn the momentum, and it was all Beach in the second half.

Outrebounding the Titans in the second half 24-13, Long Beach State would chip away at the deficit, first tying the game at 38-38 before pulling in front at 45-45 and pulling away for good after the final tie at 45 with 4:30 to play.
Jadon Jones and Slater hit back-to-back threes to push the lead out to six, and a Jordan Roberts three-point play kept the lead at six in the final 90 seconds. The Titans brought the lead back to four with 1:14 to play, but a Jones 3-pointer followed by a steal from the freshman leading to a breakaway dunk from Roberts sealed the win.
Long Beach State's nine game winning streak matches the longest for the program since the 2011-12 NCAA Tournament team won 12 in a row on the way to the Big West regular season and tournament titles.

For Monson, his 400 wins encompass his career at Gonzaga, Minnesota and Long Beach State, with 230 wins coming with the black and gold of the Beach.
