Long Beach State’s 11-game winning streak comes to an end on the road.
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Colin Slater finished with a career-high 28 points and Aboubacar Traore had his sixth double-double of the year with 14 points and 10 rebounds, but UC Santa Barbara got hot from the floor, shooting 56.1 percent on the night and snapping Long Beach State's 11-game winning streak by winning 84-71 Saturday in Santa Barbara.
UC Santa Barbara (12-10, 4-5 Big West) went inside in the first half and got hot outside to hand Long Beach State (15-10, 10-2 Big West) their first loss since January 8. The Gauchos went inside early and hit Amadou Sow for 16 first-half points on 8-of-11 shooting, as UCSB ultimately finished with 28 points in the paint in the half.
Slater scored 18 points for Long Beach State in the first half, as the Beach trailed by as many as 11 in the first half but battled back to cut the edge to just one point at the break, down 39-38.
Long Beach State hit Traore on the break to take a 45-44 second half lead, but Calvin Wishart hit a three to answer, as he scored all 16 of his points in the second half to spark a 14-2 run that gave the Gauchos a crucial cushion on the way to the win.
The loss snaps the 11-game winning streak for the Beach, the longest since the 2011-12 season for Long Beach State and a streak that was the fourth-longest winning streak in the nation entering Saturday.
Long Beach State will return home, hosting UC San Diego in the Walter Pyramid on Thursday, February 24 before facing another critical road game at UC Irvine on Saturday, February 26.
