Lassina Traore debuted with a double-double as the Beach won at California Baptist 79-64
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Long Beach State held California Baptist to 32 percent shooting and had nine players with five or more points themselves as the Beach went on the road and came away with an impressive 79-64 win against the Lancers.
Long Beach State (1-0) got a lift from Lassina Traore, who recorded a double-double in his first game with LBSU, piling 13 points and 12 rebounds while sharing the scoring lead with Jadon Jones, who also finished with 13 points on the night.
Ultimately, it was the defense that shone brightest for Long Beach State on the night, as the Beach had eight steals, three blocks and held California Baptist to just 20 baskets on 62 shots from the field on the night, including just 23 percent from three.
Both teams were even through the first 10 minutes, but trailing 19-18, Long Beach State went on a 10-2 run to take the lead, one they would never relinquish the rest of the way. CBU cut the lead back to one at 32-21, but the Beach closed the half on a 6-0 run to reestablish their control.
Jones and Marcus Tsohonis came out with early baskets out of the break, quickly extending their lead to double-digits. A Tone Hunter jumper put the Beach in front 68-49 with 8:46 remaining, but the Lancers would have one final push. California Baptist cut the lead to 10 points with five minutes remaining, but a Jones 3-pointer ended the run and the Beach held off CBU the rest of the way for the win.
Just a sophomore, Jones had three 3-pointers on the night and became the 18th player in school history to hit 100 career 3-pointers at LBSU. Joel Murray also finished in double-figures with 12 points, while redshirt freshman AJ George scored nine in his Long Beach State debut, while Aboubacar Traore chipped in six points to go with nine rebounds.
Long Beach State will continue to be tested with two more great games to start the season. The Beach will travel to face No. 8 UCLA at 8 p.m. on Friday, and then host their own home opener on Sunday, November 13 at 4 p.m. as the LBSU welcomes a tournament team from a year ago in Montana State.
