Long Beach State Falls Short In Defensive Dogfight With North Texas, 68-47
11/26/2022 8:09:00 PM | Men's Basketball
North Texas pulled away in the final ten minutes after a taut first half.
NASSAU, Bahamas – A defensive battle between Long Beach State and North Texas turned on a second-half run from the Mean Green, who pulled away late in a 68-47 win Saturday in the Bahamas.
Long Beach State (3-3) used their pressure defense to force early turnovers by North Texas (5-1), and took a lead in the early portion of the game. AJ George picked up a pair of and-one opportunities and made both, the second putting the Beach on top 12-5.
Scoring was at a premium throughout, but a pair of 3-pointers from Jones and stifling defense on Tylor Perry, the leading scorer for North Texas helped spark early momentum for the Beach. LBSU held Perry scoreless in the first half, and opened up a 26-18 lead on a Jones three with 5:31 remaining the first half.
Up nine at 28-19 with 3:326 remaining the half, North Texas finally found an answer for the Beach, and closed the half on a 10-0 run to get back into the contest and lead by one at 29-28.
The teams remained in a tight contest through the first five minutes of the second half, as a Jones fast break basket evened the score at 34-34. A Kai Huntsberry three sparked another run for North Texas as Long Beach State went cold. Huntsberry, who finished with 22 points, helped the Mean Green pull away as North Texas held the Beach to 36.8 percent shooting in the second half.
Jones finished with 11 points while AJ George scored 10 for the Beach. Marcus Tsohonis returned for LBSU and gave the Beach a lift from the bench with six points, while Aboubacar Traore led the Beach in rebounding with nine boards on the night.
Long Beach State will play in the third-place game of the Baha Mar Hoops Nassau Championship against Vermont, who fell in the other semifinal on Saturday. That game is scheduled to tip off at 2:30 p.m. PT with live coverage provided by FloHoops.
