Long Beach State Falls in Straight Sets at UC Irvine

Morgan Chacon and Katie Kennedy each reached double figures in the loss

IRVINE, Calif. – It was a tough night for Long Beach State as the Beach dropped a 3-0 [18-25, 21-25, 21-25] contest at UC Irvine on Saturday night at the Bren Events Center.
With the loss, the Beach falls to 17-9 overall and 12-6 in Big West action, while the Anteaters improve to 18-10 on the year and 11-7 in league play.
LBSU was held to a .132 attack percentage over three sets and trailed UC Irvine in kills (43-35), assists (41-33), aces (4-1), digs (42-36), and blocks (9.5-5.0).
Morgan Chacon and Katie Kennedy led the Beach with 10 kills each as Chacon hit .259 and Kennedy posted a .292 clip. Chacon also recorded eight digs, two blocks, and one assist, while Kennedy added one block assist. Zayna Meyer finished the match with 28 assists, eight digs, one block and one ace.
Behind Chacon and Meyer's team-leading eight digs, was Natalie Glenn who concluded the match with seven, while senior libero Dylan Dela Cruz added five. At the net, Chacon and Callie Schwarzenbach each posted two blocks.
UC Irvine used a 6-0 run in the first set to take a 12-7 lead over Long Beach State. Despite a Beach timeout, the Anteaters managed to hold the lead the rest of the way as UCI closed the set on a 5-0 run to win 25-18.
The Beach and the Anteaters battled each other in the second set and found themselves deadlocked at 19-all after an ace from Meyer. However, UC Irvine would pull ahead, 23-19, after scoring four-straight points en route to winning 25-21.
Down 0-2, Long Beach State took a quick 1-0 lead in the third set on a kill from Kennedy. However, UC Irvine turned the tables on the Beach as the hosts went on a 6-0 run to take a 7-2 advantage. With their backs against the wall, LBSU battled back and used a 6-0 run of their own to close the gap and make it a 10-9 game in favor of UCI. From there, the conference foes traded points back and forth. With he game tied 15-15, Irvine strung together five-straight points to take a 20-15 lead that the Beach were unable to overcome as LBSU fell, 25-21.
UC Irvine's Joy Umeh led the way with 17 kills on a .424 attack percentage. Also recording double-figures was Onye Ofoegbu with 11 on a .389 clip while posting eight blocks in the contest. Setters Kelly Negron and Indy DeSmet recorded 17 and 15 assists, respectively, while libero Jensen Campbell finished the match with 13 digs.
Long Beach State will close out the regular season next week against UC Davis and UC Riverside. The Beach host the Aggies on Friday, Nov. 25, before welcoming the Highlanders on Saturday, Nov. 26. Both matches are set for 7 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
