The Beach had a tremendous comeback in the third set, but fell in four sets to the Gauchos.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Despite an impressive third set comeback victory, Long Beach State could not hold the momentum at the Thunderdome on Saturday night, falling in four sets [14-25, 21-25, 25-23, 19-25] to UC Santa Barbara.

The Beach (16-8, 11-5 Big West) recorded more kills than the Gauchos (18-8, 14-2 Big West) with 51 to their 45, but errors killed Long Beach in the loss. For the match, LBSU hit just .143 compared to UCSB's .230 clip.

Morgan Chacon led the way with her seventh double-double of the season recording 15 kills and 12 digs. Her 15 kills led the match along with her 16.5 total points. It is also her 14th straight contest with double-digit kills.

Katie Kennedy turned in a solid night with 14 kills on a team-leading .467 kill percentage, her best in Big West play this season. Zayna Meyer totaled 44 assists on the night marking her 16th match with 40-plus assists this season while Dylan Dela Cruz led the defensive effort with 14 digs for her 14th consecutive match in double-digits.

The Beach got off to a slow start in the first set, falling behind 5-0 right out of the gate, and taking an early timeout. Natalie Glenn recorded three of the first four kills as they got some momentum to start a comeback, but the Gauchos came out swinging with a match-best .571 kill percentage to take the first set 25-14.

The second set started much better for Long Beach jumping out to a 10-5 lead headlined by a huge block from Morgan Chacon and Callie Schwarzenbach. Unfortunately, after a Gaucho timeout the hosts went on two separate 4-0 runs to take a lead halfway through and hang on for a 25-21 set win.

Down two sets to none, the Beach did not get the start to the third they needed dropping the first three points. A nice 5-2 run brought them back to tie it, but the Gauchos responded to pull ahead. Down 23-18, Morgan Chacon took over. To start what would turn into a 7-0 run to close out the set, the redshirt junio recorded three straight kills to force a UCSB timeout. Back on the floor, a Gaucho attacking error, Natalie Glenn block, and two more Chacon kills capped off the run as LBSU came all the way back for the 25-23 third set victory.

Looking to carry over the momentum, the Beach jumped out to an 8-6 lead after a pair of Kailia Lopez aces. The Gauchos answered though to tie it up as the two teams battled back-and-forth with four ties and four lead changes throughout the set. The home team gained momentum as things progressed ultimately ending the set on a 7-2 run to win the fourth set and take the match, three sets to one.

Long Beach State will look to bounce back on Friday as they return home to the Walter Pyramid for a matchup with UC San Diego at 7 p.m.
