LONG BEACH, Calif. – For the first time since 2016, the Long Beach State Women's Volleyball team has won seven-straight contests as the Beach rolled passed CSU Bakersfield in a 3-0 sweep [25-10, 25-20, 25-22] on Friday night at the Walter Pyramid.
With their seventh-straight win, the Beach improved to 13-6 overall and 8-3 in The Big West, while the Roadrunners dropped to 5-18 on the year and 2-9 in league action.
Long Beach led Bakersfield in every statistical category in the match. The Beach out-hit the 'Runners .240 to .024, while also leading in kills (44-16), assists (37-14), aces (8-2), digs (44-31), and blocks (5.0 – 4.0) as LBSU dominated the contest.
The Beach started off strong as redshirt freshman setter Zayna Meyer led the team on an incredible serving run in the first set. She served up a career-high five aces, three of which came in consecutive order, to highlight an 11-0 LBSU run that opened up a 15-3 Long Beach State advantage. From there, the Beach ran the score to 25-10 to take the first set.
Meyer did a solid job leading LBSU as the Beach hit .375 in the opening frame. Over the next two sets, Long Beach State would knock down 14 and 17 kills in the second and third sets, respectively, as Meyer distributed the ball around finding sophomore middle blocker Kameron Bacon and redshirt junior outside hitter Morgan Chacon several times.
The duo finished the match with 12 kills each as Chacon led the way in the second set with six kills as Long Beach State earned the win, 25-20, over Bakersfield to take a 2-0 set lead.
Bacon heated up in the third set as she knocked down a half dozen kills in the frame to help Long Beach State keep a tough Bakersfield squad at bay. The Runners managed to even the score at 16-all, but Bacon teamed up with junior opposite Katie Kennedy for a block assist that gave LBSU the sideout and a lead it would not relinquish. The game stayed close, but the Beach held the lead and put the match away on a kill from Bacon to complete the sweep with a 25-22 victory.
What made Bacon's performance even more impressive is that she scored all 12 kills on 18 errorless swings en route to hitting a hot .667 in the match. Additionally, she posted a team-leading three blocks to go along with one dig.
Also turning in a hot-hitting performance was senior middle blocker Callie Schwarzenbach who recorded a .417 attack percentage (7-2-12), while adding two blocks.
Meyer finished the contest with 32 assists, eight digs, five aces, and one block in another all-around solid performance for the product out of Wheaton, Ill.
Long Beach State was solid defensively as the Beach limited the Runners to a mere .024 attack percentage (16-14-83) in the contest. Pacing the LBSU defense was senior libero Dylan Dela Cruz who finished the match with 11 digs to mark her 18th double-digit dig performance of the season.
CSU Bakersfield was held to just 16 total kills in the match, a season-low for Long Beach State opponents. The Runners had three players each record four kills in Ava Palm, Hana Makonova, and Lizzie Binder. Laura De Pra recorded eight assists, while Caroline Benke added 10 digs. Makonova also led the team with three blocks.
Long Beach State will face Cal Poly on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. in the Walter Pyramid. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
