Rafael Real Vergara scored four goals, but Long Beach State came up short against Stanford 13-8.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – In front of 768 on senior night, No. 6 Long Beach State held an early lead over No. 5 Stanford, but the Cardinal held off the Beach despite four goals from Rafael Real Vergara in a 13-8 defeat Friday night.
Stanford (20-2) scored in their first possession, but after that it was Long Beach State (16-8) that took the early momentum. Goals from Garrett Zaan and Bruno Chiappini put the Beach in front 2-1, and Timotijevic found the net as well as the Beach and Cardinal were even at 3-3 towards the close of the first quarter.
A goal from Jackson Painter put the Cardinal in front 4-3, but ultimately it was an offensive drought through the second quarter the hampered Long Beach State's efforts to drop Stanford on the night. The Cardinal held the Beach off of the board in the second quarter while scoring three of their own goals to take a 7-3 lead at halftime.
Stanford scored the first two goals out of the break as well before the Beach stopped the run with a Rafael Real Vergara goal. Vergara would score three more goals in the half, pulling the Beach to within four at 11-7, but ultimately the damage had been done with the earlier goalless quarter.
Long Beach State said goodbye to their graduates following the game as Drake Charamuga, Santiago Riley, JJ Loubriel, Raul Morales, Aaron Arias, Andrej Bosanac, Matt Morris, Garrett Zaan and Rafael Real Vergara all played in what could be their final home game.
The team also took the time for a special recognition for Nemanja Bakic, who didn't have a senior night of his own due to the canceled 2020 pandemic season.
The Beach will not close out the rest of Golden Coast Conference action with three league games in their next four games, continuing this weekend as Long Beach State heads up the coast to take on No. 9 Pepperdine Sunday, October 30 at Noon.
