Women’s Soccer Falls in Regular Season Finale Against UC Davis

An 84th minute goal by UC Davis giving Long Beach State a 1-0 loss.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State lost a heartbreaker to UC Davis in the regular season finale on Thursday night. The 1-0 loss moves the Beach to 6-6-6 overall and 5-2-3 in Big West play, but still own the four-seed for The Big West Championships.

The first half was relatively even for all 45 minutes. Neither team found the back of the net with the Beach launching six shots, three on goal, to UC Davis' two shots, one on target. Cherrie Cox led the offensive push with four of Long Beach's six.

Coming out of the break, the second half was an onslaught of Beach shots totaling 13 in the half. Unfortunately, UC Davis' Caeley Goldstein was not letting anything past finishing the match with nine saves.

The lone score of the night came in the 84tha minute from Sarah Canavan off a Long Beach turnover. The clear attempt came off weak and into the body of Canavan who gained control and sent a right-footed shot past a diving Zora Standifer to make it 1-0.

With all hands on deck, LBSU pulled Standifer out of goal for their final corner attempt in the final minute. Maddy Perez's ball in found the head of Standifer for a great looking shot, but once against Goldstein made the save giving the Beach a heartbreaking loss.

There is still soccer to be played at George Allen Field, however, as the Beach will be the four-seed for The Big West Championships beginning this weekend.

Information on game time and ticket purchases will be announced on Friday.
