The Beach Earn a Five-Set Victory Over Dixie State to Close out Boise State Invitational

Kashauna Williams and Miranda Canez were named to the All-Tournament Team

BOISE, Idaho – The Long Beach State women's volleyball team battled it out with Dixie State on the final day of the Boise State Invitational and came away with a 3-2 [25-17. 23-25, 25-21, 20-25, 15-10] victory behind solid efforts from Kashauna Williams and Miranda Canez who were named to the All-Tournament Team.
With the victory, the Beach improve to 2-1 on the year, while the Trailblazers fall to 0-3.
Williams led all scorers for the third-straight match with 21 kills, while hitting .231. Canez hit a sizzling .667 as she knocked down eight kills on 12 errorless swings.
The Beach finished the match with three double-doubles as freshman outside hitter Erykah Lovett recorded 20 kills and 19 digs, while sophomore libero Nicole Hoff contributed 13 assists and 22 digs, and sophomore setter Tia Chavira came off the bench to log 20 assists and 24 digs.
Long Beach State kicked off the match with a 3-0 lead over Dixie State. The Beach would lead the entire first set as they hit .314 and limited the Trailblazers to a .167 attack percentage as LBSU cruised to a 25-17 win.
The second set saw Dixie State take an early lead, but Long Beach State chipped away and used a 6-1 run to take a 14-13 lead. From there, the two teams would exchange points in a back-and-forth affair that saw the Trailblazers edge the Beach, 25-23.
Set three was much like the second, as the two teams battled each other through 11 ties and four lead changes. Long Beach State broke the game open on a 7-0 run as the Beach took a 19-13 advantage en route to taking the third set, 25-21.
After a close early fourth set, Dixie State rattled off five-straight points to take an 8-4 lead over Long Beach State. Despite the Beach's efforts, the Trailblazers held a slight led the rest of the way and claimed the fourth set, 25-20.
With the match tied 2-2, Dixie State started the fifth set on a 6-1 run as the Trailblazers jumped out in front 6-3. Williams, however, would take matters into her own hands and tally four kills in the next five points, including three-straight kills to tie the game 7-7. The Beach took a 10-8 lead on a block by Lovett which would put LBSU for good. Long Beach State would go on to close the set and match with three-straight points to defeat Dixie State, 15-10, in the fifth.
The Trailblazers were led by Whittnee Nihipali who posted 15 kills and 12 digs. Also notching a double-double was Hannah Howard who finished the match with 13 kills and 13 digs. Mena Lauren also recorded a double-double with 37 assists and 17 digs. Kate Hardy added 11 kills, to go along with eight digs and three blocks, while Mykenna Nelson logged 19 digs.
Long Beach State will take on No. 17 UCLA on Thursday, Sept. 2 at the Walter Pyramid in the Beach's home opener. First serve is set for 7 p.m. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
