LONG BEACH, Calif. – For the first time in nearly two years, the Long Beach State women's volleyball team got back on the taraflex at the Walter Pyramid. The Beach made the most it as they split a pre-determined four-set exhibition match with No. 22 Pepperdine. The Waves took the opening two sets 30-28 and 25-13, before the Beach earned wins in the third and fourth sets, 25-23 and 31-29.
Long Beach State was led by junior outside hitter Kashauna Williams who led all scorers with 22 kills to go along with 10 digs for a double-double. She also served up four aces to lead the Beach.
Offensively, Avery Nelson contributed nine kills, while Miranda Canez posted eight on 18 errorless swings for a team-leading .444 attack percentage.
The Beach utilized two setters on the night as freshman Kasia Partyka dished out 20 assists in the first two sets, while sophomore Tia Chavira logged 26 assists in the final two sets. Partyka also added seven digs and one block, while Chavira posted three digs and two blocks.
Sophomore libero Nicole Hoff led the way with 12 digs in the back row, while freshman outside hitter Erykah Lovett came off the bench and posted nine. Freshman defensive specialist Jenna Giambi also contributed to the Beach's solid defensive efforts with eight digs in the back row.
At the net, Nelson led the way with three blocks, while Kameron Bacon, Kayla Fuller, and Chavira each put up two stops.
Despite dropping the first two sets to the Waves, the Beach were competitive. LBSU forced Pepperdine to overtime in the first set before coming up just short, 30-28.
Following a tough 25-13 set two loss, the Beach came out firing in the third set as they knocked down 15 kills to the Waves' 11 and earned a 25-23 victory.
The fourth set was much like the first as it went into overtime, but this time the Beach battled back and earned a 31-29 win to even the match at two games apiece.
