BOISE, Idaho – The Long Beach State women's volleyball team battled back after dropping the first two sets to defeat Montana State in five sets [23-25, 26-28, 25-22, 25-18, 15-13] in a solid team effort.
Despite dropping the first two sets to Montana State (0-1), Long Beach State (1-0) was competitive throughout the match. LBSU fell by two in the opening frame, before forcing overtime in the second.
However, Long Beach State seemed to find is groove in the third set as the Beach used two 4-0 runs, with the first highlighted by a pair of aces from freshman outside hitter Erykah Lovett, to take a 10-4 lead. Montana State would string together four-straight points of its own to force a Long Beach State timeout as the Beach held a 16-12 edge. LBSU would stay in the driver's seat and go on to win, 25-22.
The fourth set saw the Beach hit a sizzling .483 as they connected on 15 kills off 29 swings while committing just one error. Kashauna Williams led the way, as she would go on to finish the match with 25 kills. Another 4-0 run by the Beach put LBSU up for good, 19-14, before Long Beach State closed the set, 25-18, to force a fifth and deciding set.
The Beach took an early 11-6 lead to start the fifth set, but Montana State battled back and went on a 6-0 run to take a 12-11 advantage. With their backs against the wall, Long Beach State showed its determination as the Beach regained the lead (13-12) on a block assist by Lovett and Kayla Fuller. A kill from Williams sent it to match point as the Bobcats called a timeout. The break in action would do little to stop the gritty Beach as Lovett would serve up her fourth ace of the match to win the set and match, 15-13.
In her collegiate debut, Lovett finished the match with a double-double (18 kills, 11 digs) to go along with four aces, three assists, and two blocks. Williams led all scorers with 25 kills, while adding eight digs, four blocks, and two aces.
Freshman setter Kasia Partyka paced the offense with 57 assists and 11 digs for a double-double in her collegiate debut. She led the Beach to a .269 attack percentage, while adding three kills of her own.
Seniors Miranda Canez and Avery Nelson each tallied nine kills, while Canez logged a hot .533 (9-1-15) to go along with three blocks.
In the back row, freshman defensive specialist Jenna Giambi led the way with 19 digs in her first collegiate match, while sophomore libero Nicole Hoff added 18 digs.
Montana State was led by Kira Thomsen's 15 kills and 13 digs. Setters Hannah Scott and Allie Lynch finished with 26 and 19 assists, respectively. Meanwhile, Libby Christensen tallied 17 digs, while Emma Pence patrolled the net with seven blocks.
Long Beach State will be back in action later today as the Beach face host Boise State at 6:30 p.m. (PT) / 7:30 p.m. (MT) at Bronco Gym at the Boise State Invitational.
