Beach Drops A Pair Against No. 2 UCLA

5/5/2021 7:35:00 PM | Softball

Suzy Brookshire hit her tenth home run of the season in the game two defeat.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State softball faced a tough test Wednesday and were unable to pick up a win at home against No. 2 UCLA, losing both sides of a doubleheader with the Bruins in a rescheduled game from earlier in the season.

Kellie White and Rachel Garcia dueled through three scoreless innings as the pitchers were in control early in game one. White saw just 10 batters over the first three innings, helped by turning playing a part in turning a double play herself.

UCLA (34-3) was able to break through in the fourth inning, taking advantage of a leadoff walk. Loading the bases after a trio of walks, the Bruins brought home one run on a Jenavee Peres single but Breezy Wise was able to throw out Maya Brady at the plate to limit the damage to one run.

Long Beach State (26-8) threatened in the bottom of the fourth after a leadoff single from Alyssa Gonzalez, but the Bruins held the Beach off the board and opened up their lead in the fifth. With two runners on a triple that bounced on the right field line scored two runs, and then Briana Perez came home on a groundout to increase the edge to 4-0.

The Bruins added one more run in the top of the sixth, and while the Beach got on the board after a Naomi Hernandez double scored Justine Briones in the bottom of the seventh, that would be the only run of the rally in the 5-1 defeat.

In game two, Samantha Fowler got off to a strong start with three strikeouts in the first inning, but the Bruins were able to plate a pair of runs in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. The game turned in the third inning, as a leadoff double was just out of the reach of Sara Olson in center field, and then on an ensuing single the ball slipped under her glove, rolling to the outfield as Maya Brady cleared the bases and came around to score prior to a solo home run from Anna Vines.

Long Beach State cut the lead to three as Alyssa Gonzalez singled to start the bottom of the fourth, and Suzy Brookshire followed with her tenth home run of the season to cut the lead to 5-2. The Bruins would take advantage of four walks in the fifth inning from Morgan Quinlan and score five runs, halting the game early in a 10-2 run-rule defeat.

Long Beach State's Pac-12 week continues on Saturday, when the Beach hosts Cal for a doubleheader starting at Noon.
