The 2021 season came to an end on Saturday as the Beach fell in the semi-finals of the Big West Championships.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State (19-14) had their season come to an unfortunate end on Saturday as they fell to Cal Poly in the semi-finals of the Big West Tournament.
The Beach began their day with a 5-0 sweep of CSU Bakersfield to advance to the semi-finals. LBSU put on a dominant showing only losing one set in the dual en route to the victory.
That would set up a semi-final matchup against the number one seed of the tournament in Cal Poly.
The Mustangs wasted no time securing the dual winning the first three flights in order. Katie Kennedy and Nicci Reinking put up a fight, taking the first set but wound up dropping the flight in three sets.
The lone point against Cal Poly came in the fourth flight as Emily Mattoon and Jillian Rodriguez outlasted the Mustangs in a long, back-and-forth battle. CP took the first set 31-29, but the LBSU duo bounced back to take the next two sets and secure the point.
Cal Poly would go on to beat Hawaii twice in the championship round to claim the Big West Conference title for the second consecutive year.
The Beach ends the 2021 season with a 19-14 record including three wins over top 25-ranked teams.
