Colin Slater led Long Beach State with 15 points off of the bench.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State bounced back from a slow start in the first half, but were unable to match the feat in the second half as the Beach fell 73-58 in the regular season finale against UC Irvine.
UC Irvine (16-8, 10-4 Big West) went on a 10-0 run to start the contest, but Long Beach State (5-11, 4-8 Big West) turned to the bench and Colin Slater, who hit two quick threes to snap the skid and help bring the Beach back into the contest.
Turning to strong defense, Long Beach State was able to pull all the way back and take a 17-16 lead on a 3-pointer from Chance Hunter, and were tied with the Anteaters as late as 28-28 with just over four minutes left in the first half.
UC Irvine closed the half on a 7-2 run to take a 35-30 edge at the break, and extended their lead with a 9-2 run to start the second half, forcing an LBSU timeout at 44-32. The Beach would not be able to cut the lead to less than ten the rest of the way as UC Irvine swept the series following Friday's overtime heartbreaker.
Slater led the team in scoring with 15 points off the bench, the first time this season that a bench player led LBSU in scoring. Romelle Mansel added 11 and Joe Hamption finished with 10 to fill the trio of double-figure scorers for Long Beach State.
Long Beach State will enter the Big West Tournament as the No. 9 seed and face No. 8 seed CSUN for the first time this season in an opening round game. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. on March 9, and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
