Michael Carter III, Strong Defense Help Long Beach State Outlast Cal Poly 64-60

2/19/2021 8:20:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Carter III finished with his second career double-double, scoring 23 points all in the second half to lead the Beach to the victory.

LONG BEACH, Calif. –Michael Carter III scored 23 second half points and grabbed 10 rebounds for his second career double-double, and the Beach held Cal Poly to 60 points on 36.7 percent shooting to offset a poor shooting night and still come away with the win 64-60 in the long awaited return to the Walter Pyramid for the Beach.

Long Beach State (4-7, 3-4 Big West) returned to the Walter Pyramid in competition for the first time since January 2, and it was the Beach that couldn't find a rhythm offensively, finishing 2-of-17 from three and shooting just 33.3 percent overall on the evening. That icy form was particularly noticeable early, as the Beach was 0-for-10 from three in the first half, a slow start that Cal Poly (3-14, 1-10 Big West) used to their advantage, leading for over 30 minutes of the contest including the entire first half.

Trailing 16-10, Long Beach State would bounce back to tie the game at 18-18, but couldn't push over the top, and the Mustangs led 27-25 at the half.

The Beach won the battle on the glass, held Cal Poly to just 36.7 percent shooting on the evening and got to the line, which helped offset their offensive woes, making 28 free throws. They were led by Carter III, who went 9-for-11 at the charity stripe, and got started with a pair made early.

Long Beach State took  its first lead at 39-37 on an elbow jumper from Colin Slater, but the Mustangs responded with their best stretch of the game, going on a 14-5 run to take a 51-44 lead on a Riley Till paint basket.

The only two threes of the night helped the Beach answer that push, as Carter III hit from outside the arc in two straight possessions to tie the game at 54-54 with just over six minutes left. Carter III kept the run going by giving the Beach another lead at 56-54.
Cal Poly had one more answer, taking a 58-57 lead with 2:33 left to play, but the Beach held the Mustangs without a field goal the rest of the way, and took care of business at the line to seal the win.
Washington joined Carter III in double-figures with 11 points. For Carter III it was his second career double-double, the other coming last season against Cal State Los Angeles.

The teams will face off once again tomorrow, with tipoff again coming at 4 p.m. in the Walter Pyramid. Watch the game live courtesy of Beach Vision.
