Michael Carter III, Chance Hunter and Isaiah Washington all finished in double-figures for Long Beach State.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Playing together for the first time during conference play in this series against Cal Poly, the guard trio of Isaiah Washington, Michael Carter II and Chance Hunter gave the Beach a lift and a first sweep in Big West action with a 74-69 victory Saturday.
Michael Carter III finished with 15 points, Chance Hunter scored 14 with a team-high seven rebounds, and Isaiah Washington finished with 10 points, seven assists and six rebounds as the trio all played over thirty minutes and dominated the action for Long Beach State (5-7, 4-4 Big West).
Cal Poly (3-15, 1-11 Big West) recovered from a slow start to take their largest lead early at 14-10, but Long Beach State solved its woes from behind the arc, finishing the night with eight made including one from Colin Slater that erased that edge, putting the Beach on top 15-14.
The Beach led for most of the rest of the half, and took a five-point lead into the break as Carter III came up with an offensive rebound off of a missed free throw and a buzzer-beating jumper to put LBSU on top 36-31.
Shooting 50% from the floor in the second half and outrebounding the Mustangs for the second straight night, the Beach controlled the action through much of the second half. Cal Poly took just one more lead, edging in front 61-59 on a Brady Stevenson 3-pointer.
Hunter answered with a three on the other end, and the Beach never again trailed, a key late basket coming on a floater from Hunter that pushed the Long Beach State edge to six points at 71-65.
The Beach is back on the road next weekend, traveling outside of the state of California for the first time in 2020-21 on the islands against Hawai'i. The two-game series is set to begin on February 26.
