Balanced scoring not enough to hold off San Diego State on the road.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Long Beach State pulled out to a 13-12 lead after the first nine minutes, but the Aztecs ultimately held the Beach to 47 points on the night and pulled away in the second half for a 72-47 win Tuesday on the road.
Long Beach State (2-5) kept the pace early with San Diego State (5-2), taking an early lead on a Jordan Roberts jumper and pulling back out in front of the Aztecs 13-12 after a Joe Hampton 3-point play.
The Beach continued to hold onto that lead past the 12-minute mark, but a stretch of two straight turnovers led to a pair of easy baskets for San Diego State and snapped the momentum for the Beach. LBSU had a cold night throughout from behind the arc, finishing 0-for-11 collectively but the worst stretch came at that point as San Diego State went on an 18-2 run to take a 30-15 lead.
Trailing 35-21 at halftime, Jordan Roberts scored first but then the Aztecs went on another run, pushing their lead over 20 points and pulling away down the stretch.
The Beach had 11 players score and six with six or more led by Colin Slater, but had no players in double-figures on the night. Aboubacar Traore finished with seven rebounds to lead LBSU on the glass, where they had 11 offensive rebounds to San Diego State's eight.
Long Beach State will return home to Long Beach after nearly two weeks off, hosting a two-game homestand inside the Walter Pyramid. The Beach will host Loyola Marymount at 4 p.m. on Saturday, December 4 before taking on Bethesda on Wednesday, December 8.
