Murray, Slater Finish With Big Nights But No. 2 UCLA Too Much On The Road

Joel Murray scored 30 points while Colin Slater added 27 in the second game of the year.
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Long Beach State rode a pair of hot hands and trailed No. 2 UCLA by just three at halftime, but the Bruins pulled away in the second half on the way to a 100-79 victory Monday night in Pauley Pavilion.
Joel Murray scored 10 of the first 12 points for Long Beach State (1-1) as the new point guard for the Beach continued to impress as LBSU grabbed an early lead on the road at No. 2 UCLA (3-0). Colin Slater was perfect from the field in the first half, 7-of-7 overall and 3-for-3 from three as the pair sparked the Beach.
Long Beach State pulled back a seven point lead and took the lead themselves at 28-23 following a Slater basket with just over seven minutes in the half, and led as late as the four minute mark before trailing by three, 48-45, at the break.
A 13-2 run to start the second half for UCLA was the turning point in the game, though, as the offensive fireworks from Murray and Slater wasn't enough to stem the tide on the night.
Long Beach State shot 58.2% from the field behind the two guards and out-rebounded the Bruins, but also surrendered 25 turnovers which UCLA turned into 38 points. Johnny Juzang scored 25 to lead UCLA, while Jules Bernard added 22.
Murray became the 19th 30-point scorer in the Dan Monson era, while Slater's 27 points was also a career high.
The Beach will have a quick turnaround, returning to the Walter Pyramid for the team's home opener, hosting Utah Valley at 7 p.m. on Wednesday night. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
