Long Beach State Goes To Overtime Again But Falls This Time, 84-78 Against Utah Valley

11/17/2021 10:34:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Joel Murray scored 18 points and Jordan Roberts added 16 leading four in double-figures for LBSU.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State and Utah Valley played a tight game throughout that felt destined for overtime, but the Wolverines leaned on their star Fardaws Aimaq to outlast the Beach 84-78 after the extra period.

Neither team led by more five until the closing seconds of overtime in a truly balanced game between the two programs.

Utah Valley (3-1) controlled the glass in the biggest difference between the teams on the night, winning that battle 45-28 in large part behind Aimaq, who finished the evening with 25 points and 16 rebounds.

For Long Beach State (1-2), Joel Murray finished with 18 points while Jordan Roberts had 16. Joe Hampton returned to action with 13 points off of the bench, while Colin Slater chipped in 10 and Drew Cobb added nine.

The Beach pulled back an early five-point edge for Utah Valley by the ten-minute mark on a 3-pointer from Jadon Jones, and led by four at 24-20 with just under five minutes remaining in the first half, but would ultimately head into the locker room down three at 31-28.

Roberts, who had been limited with early foul trouble in the first half, gave the Beach a lift in the second, scoring all 16 of his points in the latter half as the teams traded the lead five times with 12 ties.
Tied at 66 with 30 seconds remaining, the Beach went inside to Hampton who put LBSU on top by two, but Utah Valley answered with a basket of their own and Joel Murray's last second shot to win it was just off target.

Long Beach State struck first in overtime, but the teams would trade baskets as the Beach led by two as late as 1:43 remaining. Blaze Nield would hit the first of two straight 3-pointers that switched the momentum back to Utah Valley, putting the Wolverines on top by two with just under a minute remaining. Hampton's answer at the other end didn't fall and a final key rebound along with four free throws sealed the win for Utah Valley.

Next up for Long Beach State is a bit of travel, as the Beach is the lone Western program taking part in the Naples Invitational. Starting with a game against Missouri State on Monday, November 22, the team will play three games in three days against other mid-major programs as part of the tournament.
