LONG BEACH, Calif. –
Long Beach State came out swinging against UC Santa Barbara as the Beach went on to earn a 3-1 [25-20, 25-17, 13-25, 25-19] victory over the Gauchos on Saturday night.

LBSU has now won three of their last four matches to improve to 12-15 overall and 6-10 in Big West action. Meanwhile, UCSB drops to 17-11 on the year and 13-3 in conference play.

Freshman Erykah Lovett got the match started with an ace as Long Beach State took an early lead over UC Santa Barbara in the first set. The Gauchos managed to tie the game three times, but the Beach held the lead throughout, before winning the opening set 25-20.

Long Beach State continued to play their game in the second set hitting .345, while limiting UCSB to a .111 attack percentage. The Beach broke a 7-7 tie on a kill from Katie Kennedy as LBSU went on an 8-0 behind a strong serve from freshman Kailia Lopez. Lopez would cap that run with an ace. With a comfortable lead, Long Beach State cruised to a 25-17 win as the Beach took a 2-0 set lead over the Gauchos.

UC Santa Barbara worked hard to avoid the sweep as the Gauchos came out firing in the third set and out-hit Long Beach State .429 to .030. With the Gauchos on a run, Long Beach State fell behind and was unable to recover as UCSB claimed the third set, 25-13.

Despite the setback in the third, the Beach jumped right back into playing Long Beach State volleyball and turned in their best showing of the night. LBSU hit .361 in the frame as the Beach knocked down 15 kills on 36 swings, while committing just two errors.

Following two early lead changes and four ties, Long Beach State used a 7-0 run highlighted by a Tia Chavira serving ace to break the game open. From there, the Beach held a comfortable lead and close the set and match on a kill from Kennedy to win, 25-19, and complete the four-set victory.

Kennedy and Kashauna Williams led the offensive attack with 11 kills each, while Kennedy hit .400 in the contest to go along with three digs and two blocks. Chavira set a solid game as Long Beach State hit .244 on the night as Chavira finished with 31 assists, seven digs, six kills, and three aces in another all-around solid performance for the sophomore setter.
