Long Beach State Defeats CSUN in Defensively Charged Match

Kameron Bacon tied her career-high with nine kills, while three players logged double-digit digs, and LBSU posted 11 total blocks in the four-set victory

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Long Beach State women's volleyball defense stepped up on Friday night as the Beach kept CSUN from hitting over .100 in the match en route to defeating the Matadors 3-1 [25-18, 18-25, 25-17, 25-14] at the Walter Pyramid.
Long Beach State (11-15, 5-10 Big West) was led by three players tallying double-digit digs, while the Beach defense out-blocked CSUN (5-20, 4-11 Big West) 11.0 total team blocks to 3.0.
Sophomore libero Nicole Hoff and freshman outside hitter Erykah Lovett led the back row with 16 digs each, while sophomore setter Tia Chavira registered a double-double with 33 assists and 14 digs.
At the net, senior middle blocker Miranda Canez posted five blocks (2 solos, 3 block assists), while freshman middle blocker Kameron Bacon added four (1 solo, 3 block assists).
The middles were hot offensively as well. Bacon led the charge with nine kills to tie her career-high while hitting .353 (9-3-17). Meanwhile, Canez hit .312 with seven kills. Joining Canez with seven kills on the night were senior outside hitter Avery Nelson, sophomore opposite Katie Kennedy, and Lovett. Lovett also led the Beach at the service line with three aces.
The Beach broke a first set 2-2 tie with three-straight points to take a 5-2 lead which they would not relinquish. Long Beach State held a steady lead over CSUN the rest of the set pushing its lead to as many as eight (19-11) before taking the first set, 25-18.
CSUN managed to even the match at one set apiece with a 25-18 set two win. The Matadors jumped out in front with a 6-3 lead early and never looked back, despite the Beach closing the gap and making it a four-point game (22-18) before the Matadors pulled away.
With the match tied at one set apiece, CSUN opened the third set with three-straight points, but the Beach used a 5-0 run to take a 5-3 advantage. Long Beach State would lead the rest of the way as the Beach cruised to a 25-17victory.
As Long Beach State held a 2-1 set lead, CSUN was quick to jump on the board taking a 2-0 lead in the fourth set. However, the Beach would even things up at 3-3 marking the first of seven ties and three lead changes in the frame. Kennedy would break a 10-10 tie giving LBSU the lead for good as the Beach soared ahead and opened up a 10-point lead (23-13) after a 7-0 run. With a comfortable lead, Long Beach State closed out the set and match with a block by Bacon and Kashauna Williams to win, 25-14.
CSUN was led by Taylor Orshoff (12 kills) and Nicole Nevarez (11 kills), while Carisa Barron logged 23 assists, and Makayla Bradford collected 19 digs. Nevarez would finish with a double-double as she added 11 digs, meanwhile Lexi McLeod posted 13 digs in the back row for the Matadors.
Long Beach State will be back in action on Saturday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m., when the Beach hosts UC Santa Barbara at the Walter Pyramid.
