Long Beach State Gears Up for Big West Championships

The Beach is headed up to Davis for the conference championships on Friday.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State is set to compete in the Big West Championships this Friday. The meet will be hosted by UC Davis at the Wildhorse Golf Club.

The meet, which determines the conference's individual and team champions, will start with the men's 8K race at 9 a.m. and conclude with the women's 6K race that is scheduled for a 10 a.m. start time. The awards ceremony will follow after the conclusion of the women's competition.
The course consists of 2K grass loops with rolling hills nestled alongside a pecan orchard. It is compact and is expected to be quick for the racers. The women will complete the loop three times and the men four times.
Allie Scimia and Ryley Fick have each crossed the line first for Long Beach State this year and both put their names in the record books. Scimia was also named Big West Athlete of the Week for the week of October 5.
Among the Beach women that ran back in 2019, Sofia Ramos posted the best finish at 39th with a time of 22:15.22. Ryley Fick was not far behind in 48th at 22:35.52 with Tiana Prince being the final returner from the championships two years ago posting a 23:22.07. Overall, Long Beach State finished seventh with a score of 204.
Michael Phillips has been the top runner on the men's side crossing the line first for the Beach in three of their four meets. The junior transfer became the first LBSU athlete to earn two Big West Athlete of the Week honors in a single-season since 2004 taking home the award on September 21 and October 5.
For the men, Ricky Villa and Jacob Korgan posted the best times at the 2019 championships finishing back-to-back at 26:01.27 and 26:02.44, respectively. Antonio Munoz is the only other runner that competed two years ago, posting a time of 27:32.62. The men finished sixth as a team with a score of 167.
Following the Big West Championships, Long Beach State will head up to Sacramento, Calif. for the NCAA West Regionals on November 12.
