Seminaris was the lone Dirtbag picked in the shortened, five-round 2020 MLB Draft.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Junior Adam Seminaris was picked Wednesday in the 2020 Major League Baseball Draft, going 141st overall in the fifth round to the Los Angeles Angels.
A junior from Chino Hills, Calif., Seminaris will have the opportunity to join the organization closest to him, as the Angels selected the left-handed pitcher with their final pick in the shortened 2020 MLB draft, which was reduced to five rounds from its customary 40.
As a sophomore in 2019, Seminaris was Long Beach State's Friday night starter, earning Honorable Mention All-Big West honors.
The southpaw continued to impress scouts with a solid season in the Cape Cod League over the summer of 2019, and then the junior dominated in the shortened 2020 campaign. Striking out 35 in three starts, Seminaris had a 12/1 strikeout to walk ratio and posted a 1.23 ERA while the Dirtbags won all four games he pitched in.
Seminaris became the first pitcher since Dirtbags and Angels Legend Jered Weaver to strike out 14 batters in one game, notching the accomplishment against Xavier in his final start of the season.
Playing a big role in the team's strong start, Long Beach State closed the season ranked No. 12 in the nation after four straight series wins to begin the season.
Seminaris becomes the first Dirtbag since David Banuelos in 2017 to be selected in the first five rounds, and the 25th overall from the program since 2000. Of those 24 prior players, 18 would go on to play in Major League Baseball.
