Following his dominant seven shutout innings against Cal, sophomore LHP Alfredo Ruiz was named the Big West Pitcher of the Week. It’s the first weekly award of his career after he racked up a career-best 10 strikeouts against the Golden Bears.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Sophomore Alfredo Ruiz was named the Big West Pitcher of the Week on Monday, recognizing his terrific start against Cal on Saturday. It's the first weekly award of Ruiz's career, following his first outing of the 2020 season.
Â
Ruiz tossed seven shutout innings against Cal, striking out a career-high 10 batters. He also didn't walk a batter while establishing a new career high in innings pitched. Ruiz gave up just two singles in the contest, but neither ball made it out of the infield.
Â
He was also remarkably efficient with his pitches, needing just 79 to make it through seven innings. Perhaps more impressively, a whopping 62 of those pitches were for strikes, giving him a strike percentage of over 78 percent. He threw mothing but strikes in the first inning and his first 16 pitches of the game found the strike zone.
Â
After Ruiz left the game, Jonathan Carlos covered the final two innings to give the Dirtbags their first shutout win of the season.
Â
Not to be overlooked, junior Adam Seminaris also had a terrific outing that warrants award consideration. He struck out a career-high 11 batters in six scoreless innings on opening night, with the Dirtbags rallying in the 13th inning for a walk-off win.
Â
The Dirtbags are back in action on Tuesday night, hosting Washington at 6 p.m.
