LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State head women's basketball coach Jeff Cammon announced the signing of two incoming freshman guards for the 2021-22 season. Thea Mikkelsen, a point guard from Roskilde, Denmark, and Shelby Ray a shooting guard from Lexington, Texas, signed their National Letters of Intent to study and play at LBSU.
"I'm very excited about our 2021 class," Cammon said. "It's not a large class in numbers, but it's a large class in what these two will bring to an already talented roster."
Thea Mikkelsen
Fr. | Point Guard | 5-6 | Roskilde, Denmark | Falkonergardens Gymnasium
Mikkelsen will come to Long Beach State all the way from Roskilde, Denmark where she excelled as a point guard for the National Team five years in a row. A talented and athletic player, Mikkelsen helped her U16 National Team win the European Championship, before leading her U18 National Team to a second place finish at the Nordic Championship. In 2019-20, she led her club team, Dameligaen, to a third place finish.
A four-time MVP, Mikkelsen earned the honors twice in 2013 at the U12 Aarhus Basketball Festival on both the girl's and boy's side. She went on to take home the MVP award in 2018 at the U17 Finals at the Danish Cup Finals, before garnering U19 Finals MVP accolades at the 2019 Danish Cup Finals. Additionally, in 2016 she was selected to represent Denmark at the U15 FIBA European Women's Basketball Summit and was a 2019 Scania Cup All-Star at the Nordic Championships for club teams.
Cammon on Mikkelsen:
"Thea is a dynamic point guard that has the ability to make others better and also score the basketball. Thea has competed internationally for her country and will come to the Beach with plenty of high-level experience. She is a winner that loves to compete. Her quickness, vision, ball skills, and ability to really shoot the ball will allow her to make an impact right away. She is an amazing young lady and we couldn't be happier for Thea to join our Beach family."
Shelby Ray
Fr. | Shooting Guard | 6-3 | Lexington, Texas | Lexington ISD
Ray is a 6-foot-3 shooting guard out of Lexington, Texas where she was a four-year letterwinner at Lexington ISD. While prepping for the Eagles, Ray earned Offensive MVP honors all four years and was a four-time First Team All-District selection. She was named to the All-State Team, and also excelled in the classroom as she was an Academic All-District selection.
Cammon on Ray:
"At 6-3, Shelby is a long, versatile forward that has a tremendous upside. She has great ball skills for her size and can really shoot the ball. She has exceptional hands, great basketball instincts, and great court vision. Shelby is a natural athlete that has a knack for blocking shots and rebounding. What truly makes Shelby special is her fearlessness; she's a tough competitor and plays the game with passion. We truly feel we got a steal with this young lady. I'm excited to welcome Shelby to our Beach family."
