Double Double-Doubles Lead Long Beach State Past Cal State Los Angeles

1/4/2020 7:55:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Michael Carter III, Chance Hunter collect Long Beach State’s first double-doubles of the year in the win.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State dominated the glass on Saturday, finishing with a pair of double-doubles from Michael Carter III and Chance Hunter as the Beach took down Cal State Los Angeles 76-60 to start 2020 and finish non-conference action.

Carter III had a tremendous all-around performance, finishing with 14 points, a career-high smashing 15 rebounds and a team-high four assists to pace Long Beach State (5-11). It was also Hunter's first double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Colin Slater led the team in scoring with 18 points.

It was the defense that led the way early for the Beach against Cal State Los Angeles (9-5), as Long Beach State started the game on a 17-4 run that dictated the tone of the game early. Slater's three pushed the lead to 13 points after the first eight minutes of the game, and the Golden Eagles would never come within single digits again.

That was helped by a big night on the boards for the Beach, as LBSU had over 50 rebounds for the first time since last January in a 52-40 edge, and the Beach had 19 points on 15 offensive rebounds to help lead the way.

LBSU also finished the night 19-of-24 from the free throw line, led by Slater who made 7-of-8 as well as three 3-pointers to lead to his team-high 18 points to go with three assists. In all, the Beach moved the ball well, closing the game with 15 assists on 25 made baskets.

Michael-Isaiah Ajiboye closed the game with 15 points leading the Golden Eagles, who closed to within 12 points of the Beach in the final minutes, but an inbounds steal and a dunk from Carter III closed out the victory for the Beach.

Long Beach State starts Big West play on the road with two games next week. The Beach will start the 16-game slate at CSUN Wednesday on a game televised by ESPN3 before heading to UC Santa Barbara on Saturday.
