Long Beach State Battles Cal State Fullerton in Tough 69-65 Loss

Davison leads the Beach with 19 points, Kinslow notches a double-double is setback

FULLERTON, Calif. – Long Beach State played a solid game against Cal State Fullerton in which Shanaijah Davison turned in a 19-point performance and Cyndee Kinslow notched a double-double, but the Beach came up just short in a tough 69-65 loss at Titan Gym on Saturday evening.
The Beach (6-9, 1-1 Big West) shot 43.5 percent from the field and made six three-pointers, but were outscored 20-12 by the Titans (10-5, 2-0 Big West) in the fourth quarter which proved to be the difference maker.
Davison led LBSU with 19 points, while adding four steals, three assists, and two boards. Kinslow added 16 and led the Beach with 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Ma'Qhi Berry, meanwhile, collected 10 points while registering four assists, three rebounds, and two steals.
Cal State Fullerton opened the game on a 7-0 run and extended its lead up to 12 (18-6) in nearly six minutes of action. Despite the double-digit deficit, the Beach chipped away and trailed by six (23-17) at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter seemed to be the turning point for Long Beach State. The Beach came out firing and evened the score at 23-all on a layup by Berry at 8:22. After holding the Titans scoreless for the first four minutes of the frame, Fullerton manages to get on the board. From there, the two teams battled toe-to-toe and find themselves in a one-possession game (32-30) at halftime.
The competitive game continued into the second half as the Titans were quick to take a five-point lead (35-30) on a three out of the gate, which would be the largest lead of the half by either team. The Beach would not go away quietly as LBSU tied the game at 35-all before jumping out in front 42-28 for its largest lead of the game. The Beach would lead by four several times including at the end of the quarter as Long Beach State led 53-49 heading into the fourth.
Long Beach State held the lead throughout the fourth quarter until Taylor Turney hit a three with just 1:15 remaining to give the Titans a two-point advantage (67-65). The Beach had possession and with just 15 seconds on the clock, were called for a foul. Fullerton's Carolyn Gill sunk both free throws as the Beach dropped a 69-65 decision.
Cal State Fullerton was led by Amiee Book who finished with 21 points, while Gill added 11 points, and Turney and Madison Freemon each contributed 10 of their own.
The Beach look to get back on the winning track when they face UC Davis on Thursday, Jan. 16 at 6 p.m. in Davis, Calif.
