SANTA BARBARA, Calif. –
The No. 4 Long Beach State Men's Volleyball team went 3-0 at the UCSB Asics Invitational after earning a 3-2 [25-22, 25-20, 15-25, 23-25, 15-11] victory over Concordia on Saturday evening at Rob Gym.

The Beach (3-0) were led by junior outside hitter Ethan Siegfried who registered a career-high 21 kills while hitting .348 (21-5-46) to go along with six digs. Siegfried led a quartet of double-figure scorers which included Spencer Olivier (14 kills), Simon Andersen (11 kills), and Shane Holdaway (10 kills). Olivier added 12 digs as he recorded a double-double, the first of his collegiate career, while also tallying three service aces and hitting .357 (14-4-28).

Andersen and Holdaway each hit .500 or better in the match as Andersen led the way with a .579 attack percentage (11-0-19) and Holdaway turned in a .500 clip (10-2-16).

Setting up each of the hitters was junior setter Carlos Rivera who recorded his second double-double in as many days with 53 assists and 12 digs. Rivera led LBSU to a .350 attack percentage and kept the offense running smoothly.

Defensively, Long Beach State was led once again by freshman libero Mason Briggs who tied his career-high with a 12-dig performance. The Beach had three players reach double-figure digs in Briggs, Rivera, and Olivier who all collected 12 on the night.

At the net, Andersen put up four blocks (one solo, three block assists), while Holdaway collected three (two solos, one block assist), and Rivera and Alexander Anastassiades each added two of their own.

Long Beach State started the match off hitting .609 (15-1-23) in the first set as the Beach charged ahead of the Eagles (2-2). Despite LBSU's hot-hitting, Concordia turned in a .357 attack percentage (14-4-28) of its own to stay in the game. The first set saw the two ties battle through 10 ties, before Long Beach State broke a 21-21 tie on a kill by Anastassiades to go ahead for good. The Beach used an Andersen kill to push it to set point and won, 25-22.

The Beach kept things going in the second set as they quickly jumped out to a 10-5 lead forcing the Eagles to call a timeout. Long Beach State led Concordia the rest of the set as the Beach hit .433 knocking down 17 kills en route to a 25-20 victory.

Leading two sets to none, Long Beach State's offense went cold in the third set as the Beach hit .148 to the Eagles' .423. Concordia took full advantage of LBSU's woes as the Eagles rolled to a 25-15 win.

The Eagles' momentum from the 10-point third set win carried into the fourth set as Concordia took an 11-7 lead. The Beach would not go away and they chipped away at the Eagles' lead before using a 5-0 run to tie the game 22-22 forcing CUI to call a timeout. Following the break in action, Concordia closed the set on a 3-1 run to win the fourth set, 25-23, and force a fifth and deciding set.

Long Beach State took the court in the fifth set determined to put the match away after having jumped out to a 2-0 set lead to start and the Beach did just that as they opened the fifth set on a kill from Siegfried. LBSU led the entire fifth set and put the game and match away on a solo by block by Holdaway.

Concordia's Raymond Barsemian led all scorers with 25 kills as he hit .373 in the contest. Jordan Hoppe added 11 kills, while Mclain Mott distributed 42 assists, and Zack Meyer posted 12 digs.

The Beach will host No. 12 USC in the home opener on Friday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. at the Walter Pyramid.
