SANTA BARBARA, Calif. –
After dropping the first set to McKendree, No. 4 Long Beach State rallied to win the next three to defeat the Bearcats in four [15-25, 25-23, 26-24, 25-23] on the second day of the UCSB Asics Invitational on Friday evening.

Long Beach State (2-0) received several solid performances including a trio of double-figure efforts and a pair of double-doubles. Junior middle blocker and redshirt sophomore outside hitter Spencer Olivier led the way with 13 kills each, while junior outside Ryan Poole added 12 kills of his own.

Andersen's 13 kills came on 18 swings as he hit a sizzling .722 in the match (13-0-18) to go along with three digs and two blocks. Poole, meanwhile recorded the first double-double of his collegiate career finishing the contest with 12 kills and as many digs for a new career-high in both categories. Poole went on to hit .417 (12-2-24) in the match, while also collecting an assist.

Junior setter Carlos Rivera also registered his first-career double-double as he racked up 55 assists and 11 digs while piloting the Beach to a .293 attack percentage. Rivera also added a service ace in the match.

Other top performers for the Beach were freshman libero Mason Briggs who led a stout defense as he recorded eight digs in the back row, while sophomore middle blocker Shane Holdaway came off the bench to contribute nine kills on .316 hitting and a pair of blocks. Lastly, redshirt sophomore opposite Alexander Anastassiades had a career game from the service line as he served up three aces to go along with three blocks, seven kills, and dour digs.

McKendree's (1-1) offense started off on point as the Bearcats hit .458 (13-2-24) in the opening frame. After breaking an early 1-1 tie with a 4-0 run, McKendree led the rest of the way as the Bearcats claimed the first set, 25-15.

Despite the setback, Long Beach State came out ready to go in the second set as the young and gritty Beach battled the Bearcats hard. McKendree took a five-point lead (15-10) after an ace from Wyatt Dimke, but LBSU bounded back and evened the score at 17-17 on a kill from Andersen. From there, the two teams matched each other point-for-point until the Beach used a 4-0 run to take a 22-18 advantage. After a timeout, McKendree managed to pull within one (22-21), but Long Beach State would not allow them to come any closer as the Beach earned a 25-23 victory to even the match at one set apiece.

The closely contested battle continued into the third set as the two teams fought through 17 ties in the set. McKendree pushed it to set point, 24-22, but the Beach were not done yet. Long Beach State put the pressure on McKendree and forced the Bearcats into back-to-back errors after a kill from Poole as LBSU held set point, 25-24, before Poole gave the Beach the win with another kill (26-24).

With Long Beach State leading two sets to one, the two teams continued to battle each other on the court in the fourth set. Once again, the Beach and the Bearcats treated the spectators inside Rob Gym to another back-and-forth affair before Long Beach State used a 3-0 run to break an 18-18 tie. After a timeout by McKendree, the Beach came back out and sent it to match point, 24-22, on a kill by Poole. After the Bearcats made it a one-point game (24-23), Olivier finished the set and match with his 13th kill of the match for a new career-best.

McKendree was led by Zach Schnittker's 14 kills, seven digs and three blocks, while Patrick Ross finished with a double-double (11 kills, 12 digs), and Dimke rounded out the double-figure scorers with 12 kills. Libero Francisco Comas concluded the match with 16 kills for the Bearcats.

Long Beach State will close out action at the UCSB Asics Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 11 when the Beach faces Concordia at 5:30 p.m.
