Junior Kayla Cannon scored the first game-winning goal of her career to lift Long Beach State to a 2-1 victory over San Diego in double overtime. Cannon’s goal went home with less than two minutes left to play, giving LBSU its first win of the season after playing a pair of Top 10 teams.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – With less than two minutes left in the second overtime period, junior Kayla Cannon fired in the golden goal to give Long Beach State (1-2-0) a thrilling 2-1 victory over visiting San Diego (2-1-0) on Monday night at George Allen Field.
The goal was Cannon's first of the season and it's the first game-winning goal of her career. The play started with a ball into the penalty area from Kaylee Ramirez, which was flicked on with a header by Katie Pingel. Sierra Castles then played the ball backwards to a waiting Cannon, who took one touch to settle the ball before firing it past the San Diego keeper.

Long Beach State was in control for most of the night, outshooting the visitors 18-5 with a 9-3 edge in shots on goal. Six players attempted multiple shots for the Beach, with Angela Morales and Lena Silano each posting career highs with three shots to lead the team.
After a relatively quiet first 75 minutes, the game really opened up with 15 minutes left to play. The Beach struck first with the help of a beautiful cross from Silano, which opened up a one-on-one opportunity for Sierra Castles in the box. After her original shot was saved, the rebound fell perfectly for Mackenzie Magaoay, who made no mistake in putting away the chance. The goal was the second of Magaoay's career and gave Long Beach its first lead of the season.

San Diego went against the run of play and scored less than four minutes later, tying the game at 1-1 with just over 10 minutes left in regulation. The Toreros had just one shot prior to the Long Beach State goal, but were able to mount an attack and eventually tie the game on their fourth go at goal, with Milan Moses scoring for the third time this season.
During overtime, the Beach outshot USD 5-1, and scored with 1:48 left on the clock in double OT to avoid the draw. This was the third overtime game between LBSU and USD over the last five meetings between the schools.
Long Beach State continues its homestand with two more matches this weekend, hosting Nebraska on Friday night before a Sunday afternoon meeting with Drexel.
