Beach Men’s Golf has added assistant coach Rich Gilkey to Michael Wilson’s staff for the upcoming 2019-20 season.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – California native Rich Gilkey has joined head coach Michael Wilson's staff at Long Beach State, becoming the new assistant coach for Beach Men's Golf. Gilkey brings extensive experience within the sport, competing as a Division I golfer at Fresno State.
"We are excited to welcome Rich Gilkey to The Beach," said Wilson, who is entering his third season as head coach. "Rich is competitive, enthusiastic and extremely passionate about coaching and the game of golf. His past experience as a player, caddie, and teacher will suit him well as a coach. I'm confident that he will positively represent our program and have an immediate impact on our young roster."
Gilkey graduated from Liberty High School in Bakersfield, where he was an All-Area golfer and a regional qualifier. From there, he played collegiately at Bakersfield College and Cal State San Marcos before ending his college career at Fresno State, where he earned his BA in economics in 2014. After college, Gilkey has continued to compete in amateur events, including the 2015 US Amateur at Olympia Fields CC.
He also has over two years of experience managing the pro shop at Sundale Country Club in Bakersfield, where he also worked as a teacher in various disciplines. This summer, Gilkey caddied on the Champions Tour, working in the 2019 Senior PGA Championship and 2019 US Senior Open.
"I am very excited to be joining the men's golf program here at Long Beach State," Gilkey said. "I see nothing but a bright future for the program and I am grateful for the opportunity to be a part of it."
