
No. 12 Long Beach State Splits a Pair of Matches on Final Day of Big West Tournament

Long Beach State defeated CSUN before falling to Hawaii
MALIBU, Calif. – No. 12 Long Beach State, which was a No. 3 seed in the Big West Conference Tournament, battled on the final day of the tournament but came up just short narrowly missing the championship match. The Beach opened the day with a sweep of No. 4 seed CSUN, before dropping a 3-2 decision to top-seed and No. 5 Hawaii.
Long Beach State (21-11) was dominant in the match against CSUN (16-12) as the Beach dropped just one set in the match. The Beach's No. 1, 2, 3, and 4 pairs each won in straight sets as the top flight of Megan Kruidhof and Mari Molina led the way.
Kruidhof and Molina picked up a 21-14, 21-10 victory over CSUN's No. 1 pair of Daniella Molinari and Seyvion Waggoner to give the Beach a 2-0 lead after No. 2 Zoi Konstantopoulou and Nicci Reinking won 21-11, 21-14.
The No. 4 pair of Sydney Stevens and Clair Newlander clinched the match for Long Beach State as the duo handed Nicole Nevarez and Lexi McLeod a 21-18, 21-12 loss to put the Beach up 3-0.
Kendra Koelsch and Kenzie Holtz picked up a two-set win at No. 3, before Tyler Spriggs and Alexis Patterson completed the sweep with a three-set victory at No. 5.
With the victory over the Matadors, the Beach turned around to face top-ranked Hawaii (26-9) in an elimination game.
The Sandbows jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead after picking up wins at No. 4 and No. 1, however, Long Beach State showed its determination and battled back winning at No. 2.
At the No. 2 spot, Konstantopoulou and Reinking took Morgan Martin and Pani Napoleon to three sets as the Beach won 21-17, 18-21, 15-12.
However, Hawaii clinched the match with a win at No. 3 as Koelsch and Holtz came up just short 21-14, 21-8, before Spriggs and Patterson won at No. 5 in three sets (21-11, 19-21, 15-12).
The 2019 NC Beach Volleyball Championship bracket will be announced Sunday, April 28 at 4 p.m. on NCAA.com.
