Long Beach State falls 5-0 at USC
LOS ANGELES – The No. 9 Long Beach State beach volleyball team battled No. 2 USC on Thursday at Merle Norman Stadium in Los Angeles, but ultimately fell in five sets to the Trojans.
The Beach (17-6) saw their No. 2 and No. 5 flights push the Trojans (21-4) to three set, but were unable to come away with a victory.
After dropping the first set, 21-15, to USC's Cammie Dorn and Hannah Martin, the duo of Alexis Patterson and Tyler Spriggs turned the tables on the Trojans and claimed the second set, 21-15, to force a third set. In the third, the pairs went back-and-forth and pushed it to set point several times before Dorn and Martin edged out Patterson and Spriggs, 18-16.
The top flight of Megan Kruidhof and Mari Molina went head-to-head against Abril Bustamante and Tina Graudina, but fell 21-18, 21-14, as USC clinched the match.
In the second round of sets, the Beach continued to show their grit as the No. 2 pair of Zoi Konstantopoulou and Nicci Reinking took the Trojans' Terese Cannon and Sammy Slater to three sets. Konstantopoulou and Reinking opened the frame with a 21-19 win and battled USC's pair in the second set before falling 22-20. In the third set, the Beach suffered a 15-9 setback as they fell in straight sets.
Long Beach State looks to bounce back on Friday, April 12 when it hosts No. 12 Cal at 11:30 a.m. at the LBSU Sand Courts.
