The award recognizes the all-around efforts from 2018 of the finest from the Big West Conference.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Dana Fujikuni of Women's Soccer and Josh Carr of Men's Track and Field were selected as Long Beach State's female and male representatives for Big West Scholar-Athlete of the Year as announced by the conference office Wednesday.
A three-time All-Big West Conference selection, Dana finished her career with the Long Beach State women's soccer program this Fall earning Big West Conference Midfielder of the Year honors, as well as Big West Tournament Most Valuable Player honors. She was also selected as a 2018 Second Team Scholar All-America by United Soccer Coaches, recognizing her combined success on the field and in the classroom.
Fujikuni graduated in December with a degree in Health Care Administration, and held multiple internships in the medical field prior to her graduation, working in the Emergency Department at Hoag Memorial Hospital, in the Education Department at the VA Hospital in Long Beach as well as with SCCAN Health Plan in their IT Service Management unit. She is now working with United Health Group in their OptumRX unit following graduation, and looks to continue in that field as a project manager.
A returning team captain for Long Beach State Track and Field, Carr is a three-time NCAA preliminary qualifier, making the postseason in both the discus and the hammer throw. Following an All-Big West performance in the hammer, Carr enters his final season of competition at Long Beach State looking to once again lead the LBSU Throws Squad.
Carr graduated Cum Laude this Fall with a degree in Kinesiology and is now working on earning his teaching credential after making both the Dean's List and the President's List during his time at the Beach. He has spent two days a week during the last year volunteering at Lincoln Elementary School mentoring fifth graders in the Club Fit after school program and wants to teach and coach at either the middle school or high school level following the end of his time at the Beach.
