Shorthanded Long Beach State Falls Against Hawai’i
2/7/2019 10:13:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Senior Temidayo Yussuf scored 18 points in his return to the LBSU starting lineup.
LONG BEACH, Calif. –Temidayo Yussuf got the nod for the starting lineup and responded with his best scoring night since his return, leading the Beach with 18 points and six rebounds, but a strong shooting night for Hawai'i helped the Rainbow Warriors come away with a 77-70 win Thursday night.

Long Beach State (8-16, 2-6 Big West) was playing without Mason Riggins due to flu-like symptoms, but Yussuf responded in a big way in his first major minutes since his return after missing six games with injury. The senior finished with 18 points and six rebounds, adding two assists and a steal in 28 minutes.
Deishuan Booker added 11 with four steals and Edon Maxhuni finished with 10 points off of the bench, but it wasn't enough to stop hot shooting from outside and transition points from the Rainbow Warriors.

Hawai'i (14-8, 5-3 Big West) went 14-of -27 from three, shooting over 50% and scored 22 points off of Long Beach State turnovers, helping negate a 42-33 rebounding edge for Long Beach State and 36 points in the paint for the Beach.

The game was tight early, as neither team created a lead larger than four points over the first ten minutes, as a pair of threes from Maxhuni helped the Beach hold even with the UH sharpshooters. A three from the game's leading scorer, Brocke Stepteau pushed the UH lead to seven, and the Rainbow Warriors took a 41-35 lead into halftime.

Out of the locker room, Long Beach State went on a 9-0 run to retake the lead, but a Jack Purchase three snapped the momentum. After UH retook the lead at 47-46 on a Sheriff Drammeh three, Long Beach State would stay close for the next four minutes. The Rainbow Warriors would eventually push the lead out to eight points at 61-53, and the Beach could never get back into the lead.

Long Beach State will now play three straight on the road, starting this Saturday when the Beach travels to Cal Poly. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
