LOS ANGELES –
Long Beach State opened up the Women of Troy Classic with a strong offensive showing as the Beach shot at least 50 percent from the field for the first three quarters en route to defeating UT Rio Grande Valley, 69-65, on Friday at the Galen Center.

The Beach's (5-7) offense was led by sophomore Justina King and junior Shanaijah Davison who finished the game with 20 and 17 points, respectively. King connected on 6-of-13 field goals and drained three three-pointers, while Davison was 7-for-13 from the field and knocked down a pair of threes.

Davison did a good job passing the ball as she dished out six assists, while Ma'Qhi Berry added five, and King contributed four to help the Beach finish the game with 17 helpers.

Senior Cydnee Kinslow led the rebounding effort as she concluded the contest with eight boards, as Jasmine Hardy posted six, while King and Aaryon Green each grabbed five as LBSU outrebounded UT Rio Grande Valley (5-6) 38-32.

Long Beach State started off hot, shooting 53.3 percent from the field in the opening quarter as King contributed eight points and Davison added seven. The Beach closed out the first quarter on a 7-0 run with all seven of those points coming from Davison.

LBSU continued that run into the second quarter as the Beach used a 13-0 run to take a 27-14 advantage to start the second. Long Beach State, again, turned in a 50 percent efficiency from the field as the Beach led by as many as 18 (35-17) with 5:31 on the clock.

The Beach closed the first half shooting 51.7 percent (15-from-29) from the field and 60 percent from long distance (6-for-10) as they held a 10-point lead (39-29) over the Vaqueros at halftime.

The break did not cool off LBSU as it continued its hot-shooting into third as the Beach connected on 6-of-11 field goals to shoot their highest percentage of the game (54.5). Freshman Alexis Legan came off the bench and hit a three, then sunk the free throw to send the Beach into the fourth with a 16-point lead (59-43) over the Vaqueros.

With Long Beach State in the driver's seat, UT Rio Grande Valley found its groove and began chipping away at the Beach's lead. The Vaqueros shot 45 percent (9-for-20) in the final quarter and limited the Beach to a mere 15.4 shooting percentage (2-for-13) as they closed the gap and cut LBSU's lead down to five (60-55) with 4:04 remaining.

Long Beach State extended its lead back up to nine, but UT Rio Grande Valley continued to put pressure on the Beach. LBSU, however, held off the Vaqueros and held on to win by four (69-65).

The Vaqueros got an outstanding performance from Trelynn Tyler who led all scorers with 27 points, while adding six steals, five rebounds, two assists and one block.

The Beach will close out the Women of Troy Classic on Saturday, Dec. 21 against host USC at 1:30 p.m. at the Galen Center.
