Long Beach State Downs UC Irvine in Straight Sets in Black & Blue Rivalry

The Beach hit .347 in the match to roll over the Anteaters in a sweep
IRVINE, Calif. – The Long Beach State women's volleyball team used a balanced offense Friday night to sweep UC Irvine by set scores of 25-16, 25-14, 26-24 in the Bren Events Center.
The Beach (9-15, 6-6 Big West) hit .347 in the match as they were led by Kashauna Williams who knocked down 17 kills on a .448 attack percentage. Williams led a trio of double-figure scorers which included Amanda Henderson (10 kills) and Katie Kennedy (10 kills).
In addition to a strong offensive performance, the LBSU defense kept UC Irvine (4-19, 1-10 Big West) guessing as the Beach limited the Anteaters to a .032 attack percentage. Senior libero Hailey Harward paced the back court with eight digs, while defensive specialists Carly Hill and Dylan Dela Cruz added seven and six digs respectively.
Sophomore setter Carly Aigner-Swesey contributed on both sides of the ball as she distributed 31 assists, while collecting five digs, four kills, and two blocks.
The match began with three early ties, but Long Beach State used a 6-1 run to take a 14-9 lead over UC Irvine to break the game open. The Beach led the rest of the way as LBSU hit .333 to the Anteaters' -.174 as Long Beach State cruised to a 25-16 victory.
Leading one set to none, Long Beach State opened the second set with three straight points highlighted by back-to-back kills from Henderson. The Beach never trailed as they hit .581 in the frame and kept the Anteaters off balance and limited the hosts to a .167 attack percentage. LBSU controlled the set and rolled to a 25-14 win to take a 2-0 set lead heading into the third set.
The Beach continued their strong showing into the third set as LBSU use a 5-0 run to turn a 4-2 deficit into a 7-4 lead. Once Long Beach State had the lead, it led UC Irvine until match point (24-20). Down by four, the Anteaters tallied four-straight points to even the score (24-24). Following an LBSU timeout, the Beach pushed it to match point again, this time on a kill from YiZhi Xue, before winning the set and match on a double block by Xue and Aigner-Swesey.
Long Beach State will be back in action on Saturday, Nov. 9 at Cal State Fullerton at 7 p.m.
