LBSU Women's Basketball Kicks off 2019-20 Season at CBU, vs. Westcliff for Homecoming
The Long Beach State women's basketball team opens the 2019-20 season on Tuesday evening at California Baptist at 5 p.m., before hosting Westcliff in the home opener on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 1 p.m., in a doubleheader homecoming contest with men's basketball.

About The Beach
• Head coach Jeff Cammon begins his third season at the helm of the Long Beach State women's basketball program. In his first two seasons, he has put together a record of 17-45.
• The Beach went 9-22 last season and 5-11 in Big West Conference action.
• LBSU advanced to the quarterfinals in the Big West Conference Tournament after knocking off Cal State Fullerton in the first round.
• Long Beach State returns Big West Conference Freshman of the Year Justina King who led the Beach with 107 assists and was third on the team in scoring with 9.2 points per game.
• All-Big West Conference selections Shanaijah Davison (honorable mention) and Naomi Hunt (second team) return to the court for their junior years.
• As a sophomore, Davison was the team's leading scorer with 14.0 points per game. She also led the Beach in steals with 48.
• In addition to returning several solid players, Long Beach State also welcomes three newcomers to the Beach in freshmen Alexis Legan (G, 5-9, Palm Desert, Calif.), Kristyna Jeskeova (G, 6-2, Czech Republic), and Jada Smith (F, 6-0, Cary, N.C.).
• Looking to make a splash for Long Beach State are redshirt sophomores Ma'Qhi Berry, a 5-foot-10 guard out of Irving, Texas, and Chloe Gaynor, a 6-foot-3 center from South Normanton, England. Both Berry and Gaynor redshirted a year ago.
• Long Beach State was chosen to finish eighth in the Big West Preseason Coaches Poll and sixth in the Media Preseason Poll.
• Shanaijah Davison was selected to the Big West Preseason All-Conference Team.
Scouting California Baptist
California Baptist is coming off of an 18-12 season in which the Lancers went 11-5 in the WAC. The 2018-19 season marked their first as a Division I program as the team made an appearance in the WNIT where it lost to Pepperdine.
In 2019-20, the Lancers return four of their five starters from a year ago including WAC Newcomer of the Year Britney Thomas who led the team with 15.9 points per game and 10.8 rebounds per game. Also coming back for CBU are Delacey Brown, a junior guard who was selected to the 2018-19 All-Newcomer Team, as well as Ane Olaeta, who led the team in assists with 151.
The Series: Beach vs. Lancers
Long Beach State and California Baptist will meet for just the second time in program history. The two teams faced off in the season opener a year ago and the Lancers came out on top, 85-83. The Beach are looking even the score and collect their first win over CBU.
Scouting Westcliff
Westcliff opened the 2019-20 season dropping its first three contests to Hope International (84-70), La Sierra (69-59) and San Diego Christian (74-72). A member of the NAIA, the Warriors face off against Long Beach State for the first time in program history.
2018-19 in Review
Long Beach State is coming off of a 9-22 season a year ago. The Beach posted a 5-11 record in Big West Conference action earning the seven seed in the conference tournament. The Beach finished the season with a strong showing as they knocked off Cal State Fullerton in the first round of the Big West Conference Tournament, before ending their season against UC Riverside in teh quarterfinals.
The Beach was led offensively by sophomores Shanaijah Davison and Naomi Hunt as Davison averaged 14.0 points per game, while Hunt added 10.8. Davison also led the Beach with 48 steals, while adding 2.9 rebounds per game, 64 assists, and a pair of blocks. Hunt was efficient from beyond the arc as she drained 62 treys for a shooting percentage of 39.7 percent.
Junior Cydnee Kinslow was the Beach's leading rebounder last season with 6.4 board per game. She also contributed 3.9 points per game, 24 steals, 14 assists, and three blocks.
Freshman Justina King had a breakout rookie season in which she led Long Beach State with 107 assists, while ranking third on the squad with 9.2 points per game. The versatile King posted 1.7 rebounds per game to go along with 47 steals and three blocks.
At the conclusion of the season, King was named Big West Conference Player of the Year, becoming just the third Long Beach State player to earn the honor. She was also selected to the Big West Conference All-Freshman Team. Joining King with postseason honors were Hunt (Big West All-Second Team) and Davison (Big West Honorable Mention).
The Beach in Openers
Long Beach State is 33-23 in season openers and 41-15 in home openers. The Beach have dropped their last two season openers in close contests to Pepperdine (83-71) and California Baptist (85-83) in 2017-18 and 2018-19, respectively. The Beach will face the Lancers for the second time in season openers and are 0-1 after having dropped last season's opener to CBU. The Beach will play Westcliff for the first time ever this season.
