Long Beach State Falls to Cal, Finishes Second at Cal Classic

BERKELEY, Calif. – A slow start hampered Long Beach State on Saturday at the Cal Classic as the Beach dropped a 68-45 decision to Cal to finish second in the tournament. Justina King was named to the Cal Classic All-Tournament Team after finishing the weekend with 29 points, five assists, four steals, and two rebounds.
On the final day of the Cal Classic, King led the Beach (2-5) with 13 points, while Shanaijah Davison came off the bench to contribute 12 points. Lauren Green was solid as she cleaned up the glass with eight rebounds, while adding four points, four steals, and two assists.
The Beach had a tough first quarter as they outscored 22-7 by the Bears (5-2). Cal shot an impressive 61.5 percent from the field as the Bears connected on 8-of-13 field goals. The Bears broke the game open as they used an 11-0 run to take a 19-5 advantage over the Beach, before taking a 15-point lead into the second quarter.
Following the opening ten minutes, Long Beach State found its rhythm playing evenly with Cal the rest of the game. The Beach were only outscored 11-7 in the second quarter, but found themselves down 33-14 at halftime.
Long Beach State battled in the second half and managed to close the gap (38-24) with 3:17 remaining in the third quarter, but Cal finished the frame on an 8-0 run to make it 49-27 heading into the fourth quarter.
The fourth quarter, like the third, was competitive once again as the Beach found themselves outscored by the Bears by just one (19-18). First quarter aside, Long Beach State was outscored by just eight points (46-38).
Cal had three players reach double-figures in Cailyn Crocker (15 points), Alaysia Styles (12 points) and Jazlen Green (12 points).
In the game, Cal shot 45.1 percent from the field, while Long Beach State shot 34.0 percent. The Beach forced the Bears into 22 turnovers, and scored 16 points in the process. LBSU also recorded 12 steals to Cal's 6, but Cal held the edge in rebounding (45-23), assists (18-7), and blocks (5-1).
Long Beach State will continue its road swing on Friday, Dec. 6 at Santa Clara at 5 p.m.
