Women's Volleyball Hosts UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly This Weekend
The Long Beach State women's volleyball team returns home to host UC Santa Barbara on Friday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m., before welcoming Cal Poly on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 7 p.m. The two matches mark the final regular-season home contests for the Beach. LBSU will recognize its three seniors in Hailey Harward, Kjersti Norveel, and YiZhi Xue in a Senior Day Ceremony prior to the match.

About The Beach
• Long Beach State earned a pair of conference road sweeps last weekend as the Beach have now won three of their last four contests.
• The Beach are 10-15 overall and 7-6 in Big West action as LBSU sits in fifth in the conference standings.
• As a team, LBSU is hitting .231, while averaging 13.57 kills per set on 12.57 assists per set. Long Beach State's kills per set and assists per set average are both good for second in the conference.
• Defensively, the Beach have collected 14.07 digs per set and 1.94 blocks per set.
• Senior libero Hailey Harward continues to pace the Long Beach State defense. She picked up 19 digs at Cal State Fullerton and she now averages 4.13 digs per set. Her career total is at 1536 as she is just 42 digs away from taking third all-time at LBSU.
• Also moving up in the Long Beach State annals is senior middle blocker YiZhi Xue. Xue has now amassed 381 block assists in her collegiate career which is good for sixth place at LBSU. She is now 15 block assists away of moving into the top five.
• Offensively, sophomore Kashauna Williams leads the Beach with 4.23 kills per set. Williams has collected 22 double-figure performances this season including six in which she tallied 20 or more kills. She is the only LBSU player to average more than four kills per set this season.
• Setters Carly Aigner-Swesey and Tia Chavira have both seen action on the court this season as Aigner-Swesey leads the way with 9.71 assists per set, while Chavira averages 7.91.
• At the net, Kjersti Norveel and Xue lead the way with 1.02 and 0.93 blocks per set, respectively.
• The Beach were chosen to finish fifth in the Big West Preseason Coaches Poll behind Cal Poly, Hawaii, UC Santa Barbara, and UC Irvine, respectively.
Scouting UC Santa Barbara
UC Santa Barbara brings a 19-4 overall record and a 10-1 Big West Conference mark into the Walter Pyramid. The Gauchos suffered a pair of setbacks in their last two outings, dropping road contests to Hawaii (3-2) and Cal Poly (3-0).
The Gauchos are hitting .254, while their defense limits opponents to a .177 attack percentage.
Lindsey Ruddins leads the team with 4.50 kills per set on .282 hitting, while also contributing 2.56 digs per set and 0.67 blocks per set. She is the go-to attacker for setters Olivia Lovenberg (6.12 assists per set) and Romoni Vivao (4.92 assists per set).
Defensively, UCSB is paced by libero Zoe Fleck who averages 3.84 digs per set, while Rowan Ennis guards the net with 1.25 blocks per set.
The Series: The Beach vs. The Gauchos
Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara will face off for the 111th time in program-history and the Beach lead the all-time series 71-39. This is the second time this season the conference foes will square off. Earlier this year, UCSB defeated LBSU at the Thunderdome in four sets.
Scouting Cal Poly
Cal Poly enters the game against Long Beach State with a 17-7 overall record. The Mustangs are 10-2 in Big West play and are currently second in the standings.
The Mustangs have won four of their last five matches with their only loss coming on the road at Hawaii in four.
Maia Dvoracek leads Cal Poly offensively with 4.19 kills per set, while hitting .258. She also adds 2.25 digs per set and 0.44 blocks per set.
Avalon DeNecochea is the team's setter as she has led the offense to a .225 attack percentage with 9.39 assists per set.
In the back row, libero Mike Dickson owns 3.61 digs per set. Meredith Phillips and Madilyn Mercer lead the Mustangs at the net with 0.93 and 0.90 blocks per set, respectively.
The Series: The Beach vs. The Mustangs
Long Beach State and Cal Poly will meet for the 69th time in program history. The Beach lead the all-time series 69-24. However, the Mustangs have been the victors in the last five meetings including a 3-0 sweep of the Beach earlier this season.
Killin' It
Sophomore outside hitter Kashauna Williams leads the Beach offense with 4.23 kills per set. She is the only LBSU player to average more than four kills per set. Additionally, she has led Long Beach State in kills in 19 of the team's 25 matches thus far. Williams has notched 22 double-figure kill performances this season and has recorded at least 20 kills on six occasions.
Can You Dig It?
Hailey Harward has amassed 392 digs this season to average 4.13 digs per set. After another solid outing last week, Harward has now collected 1,536 career digs which is good for fourth all-time at Long Beach State. The Phoenix, Ariz., native is 42 digs away from third with three regular-season matches remaining.
Block Party
Senior middle blocker YiZhi Xue has also moved up in the Long Beach State career record book as the product out of Nanjing, China has now collected 381 blocks assists in her four-year collegiate career to move into sixth all-time at the Beach. Xue is 15 block assists away from moving into the top five at Long Beach State.
Aces Wild
Seniors YiZhi Xue and Hailey Harward also contribute at the service line as Xue leads the team with 20 aces, while Harward is close behind with 19. Earlier this season, Xue tallied a career-high four aces at Georgia Tech, meanwhile Harward owns a career-best seven aces after serving up a storm against Texas Tech last season. Harward now has tallied 110 aces in her career and is just five service aces shy of breaking into the top 10 at Long Beach State and tying Christine Romero and current LBSU assistant coach Sabrina Hernandez with 115.
Kashing In
Sophomore outside hitter Kashauna Williams helped lead the Beach to a pair of conference road sweeps last week en route to being named Big West Conference Player of the Week.
Williams earned the award for the first time in her career after averaging 5.83 kills per set while hitting an impressive .483 (35-7-58) attack percentage in straight-set victories over UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton.
The Los Angeles, Calif., native posted double-figure kills in both matches, with 17 against the Anteaters and 18 more versus the Titans. At Cal State Fullerton, Williams hit a career-high .517 with just three errors on 29 swings.
Misty May-Treanor Inducted into U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame
Former Long Beach State women's volleyball player Misty May-Treanor, a two-time NCAA Player of the Year and four-time Olympian, was inducted into the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Hall of Fame during an awards dinner on Friday night at the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
May-Treanor was honored as part of the class of 2019, which was comprised of eight individuals, one team, two legends, one coach and one special contributor.
During her time at LBSU, May-Treanor lead the Beach to a perfect 36-0 record en route to winning the 1998 NCAA National Championship. She capped her phenomenal season by winning the 1998-99 Honda-Broderick Cup, an award which is presented annually to the nation's outstanding collegiate woman athlete and selected by a national vote involving more than 900 NCAA-member schools. She was just the second volleyball player to ever win the prestigious award and the first from Long Beach State.
A two-time AVCA National Player of the Year, two-time Volleyball Magazine Player of the Year, and a three-time Big West Conference Player of the Year selection, May-Treanor piloted a talented Long Beach State squad to the first perfect record in NCAA history as the Beach defeated Penn State (15-3, 15-10, 13-15, 14-16, 15-12) in five sets to win the national title and bring home the program's third NCAA Women's Volleyball championship.
May-Treanor went on to earn numerous awards and accomplishments as she, along with teammate Kerri Walsh-Jennings, went on an unprecedented 90-match winning streak from 2003-04, winning 15 major international titles. She was inducted into the Long Beach State Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004, and that same year, won the Gold Medal in Beach Volleyball at the Summer Olympics in Athens. She repeated as a Gold Medalist in the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and in the London Olympics in 2012.
The inductees were determined by a voting process that includes Olympians and Paralympians, members of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic family, and an online vote open to fans. This will be the 16th class inducted into the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Hall of Fame, bringing the total to 154 inductees (individuals and teams).
