Long Beach State Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Cal State Fullerton

The Beach were led by Kashauna Williams’ 18 kills and Hailey Harward’s 19 digs in the victory

FULLERTON, Calif. – The Long Beach State women's volleyball team picked up its second sweep in as many days as the Beach trounced Cal State Fullerton by set scores of 25-23, 25-16, 25-15 on Saturday night at Titan Gym.
The Beach (10-15, 7-6 Big West) hit .360 in the match as sophomore outside Kashauna Williams led the charge with a career-high .517 attack percentage as she knocked down 18 kills on 29 attempts with just three errors. Senior middle blocker YiZhi Xue also contributed offensively with eight kills on .471 hitting (8-0-17). Sophomore setter Carly Aigner-Swesey paced LBSU as she dished out 39 assists in the contest.
Defensively, senior libero Hailey Harward anchored the backcourt with 19 digs, collecting her 21st double-figure dig contest of the season and the 87th of her career. Joining Harward in double figures for the Beach was defensive specialist Carly Hill who added 10 digs.
At the net, sophomore middle blocker Erin McFarland posted four blocks which was just one off her career-high. She also helped the Beach on the other side of the ball with four kills on eight errorless swings
The opening set between the conference foes was a battle that saw 14 ties and six lead changes. The set went down to the wire as the Beach and Titans found themselves tied at 23-all after a kill from Xue. Long Beach State pushed it to set point after a Cal State Fullerton attack error, and following a Titans timeout, put the set away on a double block by Erin McFarland and Aigner-Swesey, 25-23.
LBSU used a 4-0 run in the second set to take an 11-9 lead over Cal State Fullerton and controlled the rest of the game from there. The Beach hit .429 in the game and held the Titans to a .167 attack percentage as they cruised to a 25-16 win to take a 2-0 set lead over the Titans heading in to the third set.
The Beach opened the third set on a 7-1 run and never looked back. Long Beach State knocked down 16 kills on 35 swings, while committing just one attack error to hit .429, while owning a sideout percentage of 87 percent to dominate the frame. Long Beach State limited Cal State Fullerton to a .189 clip as the Beach trounced the Titans, 25-15, to win the set and complete the sweep.
Cal State Fullerton's Felicia Marshall led the Titans with 11 kills on .300 hitting, while Savahna Costello finished the match with seven digs.
Long Beach State returns to the Walter Pyramid to host UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly on Friday, Nov. 15 and Saturday, Nov. 16, respectively. First serve for both matches is set for 7 p.m. Saturday's contest against the Mustangs marks LBSU's final regular-season home match as the Beach will honor their three seniors, Hailey Harward, Kjersti Norveel, and YiZhi Xue, in a Senior Day ceremony.
