A professional football hall of fame inductee, Brown coached Long Beach State during the 1991 season.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Willie Brown, the head coach for Long Beach State football during the program's final season has died at the age of 78. The news was reported by the Oakland Raiders Tuesday.
A legendary cornerback, Brown played for the Denver Broncos but was most synonymous with the Oakland Raiders, for whom he played from 1967 to 1978. Best known for an interception in Super Bowl XI that helped the Raiders win their first championship, Brown was a first-ballot inductee into the Professional Football Hall of Fame in Canton in 1984.
Brown's time with the game continued as a coach, as he continued his career with the Raiders as the team's defensive backs coach.
His ties to Long Beach State began in 1991, when he was hired to replace George Allen following Allen's sudden death following the 1990 campaign. During his lone season at LBSU, Brown coached a pair of future NFL players in Terrell Davis and Jay Walker, and went 2-9 with wins over UNLV and Utah State.
After the program was suspended, Brown coached at Jordan High School for one season and then returned to the Raider organization, where he served as an administrator for over 20 years starting in 1995.
