Long Beach State Sweeps UC Riverside on the Road

YiZhi Xue knocked down 16 kills on .696 hitting, while Hailey Harward collected 17 digs in the win

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Long Beach State women's volleyball team collected a 3-0 [26-24, 25-19, 25-23] sweep over UC Riverside at the SRC Arena on Saturday evening as the Beach were led by YiZhi Xue's 16-kill effort and Hailey Harward's 17-dig performance.
The Beach (5-12, 2-3 Big West), hit .278 in the match while the Highlanders (5-12, 1-5 Big West) hit .226 in a conference battle that saw 23 ties and six lead changes over three sets.
Xue led the LBSU offense with 16 kills on 23 errorless swings as the senior middle blocker hit .696 to lead a trio of double-figure scorers. Behind Xue were Avery Nelson (11 kills) and Kashauna Williams (10 kills).
Harward paced the defense with 17 digs, while Nicole Hoff added nine in the back row. At the net, Xue excelled with four blocks to contribute on both sides of the ball.
Carly Aigner-Swesey came off the bench and distributed 33 assists in the contest, while adding five digs.
The first set began as a back-and-forth affair as the two team traded points early on. UC Riverside got things going and opened up a 16-10 lead over Long Beach State, but the Beach would not quit. LBSU rallied and used a 7-2 run to even the score at 22-all forcing a UCR timeout. From there, the Beach pushed it to set point and competed the comeback on back-to-back kills from Nelson and Katie Kennedy.
UCR started the second set on a 5-0 run, but the Beach showed their grit and determination as they rallied to tie game at 7-7. LBSU broke a 12-12 tie on a kill from Xue before breaking the game open with a 4-0 run to take a 21-17 lead before winning the set, 25-19.
With Long Beach State leading two sets to none, the two teams battled it out in the third set as they'd done in the first two sets. The game was knotted nine times and the conference foes exchanged leads on four occasions. With the set tied at 23-all, a UCR service error gave the Beach match point and Nelson finished it off with her 11 h kill of the match to complete the sweep.
UCR was led by Amarachi Osuji's 12 kills, while setter Dejah Dade added 31 assists, and libero Renata Bath collected eight digs.
Long Beach State returns home to the Walter Pyramid on Friday, Oct. 18 against Cal State Fullerton. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
