Tennis Off To Strong Start At Beach Tennis Invitational

Long Beach State won 9 of 11 matches on the opening day.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State won five of six singles matches and three of four doubles matches in a promising first day at the Beach Tennis Invitational, the opening competition of the spring season for Long Beach State Tennis.
In the modified format tournament, Long Beach State played three doubles matches against CSUN and five singles matches against Portland State, and the Beach won every single one of those matches Friday.
In doubles, freshmen Wiktoria Rutkowska and Dominique Meyer were victorious against Monika Van de Vondel and Jolene Coetzee by a score of 6-4, while returners Natalia Munoz and Lalita Devarakonda snagged a 6-3 win over Skyla Alcon and Ana Toboso. Emma Bardet and Zara Lennon were another freshman pairing that found success, winning 6-3 over Emma Roenholt and Sibel Demirbaga.
In singles, Long Beach State had a dominant day against Portland State, winning five matches in straight sets, highlighted by a 6-0, 6-0 win by the junior Munoz over Taylor Rees. Bardet only dropped one game in a 6-0, 6-1 win over Alli Valk, as did Lennon against Ashley Knecht in a match that finished with an identical score.
Devarakonda was a 6-1, 6-3 winner over Gerda Upeniece, and Rutkowska won 6-3, 6-3 over Lotti Meszaros.
Long Beach State's only losses Friday came in matches against San Diego, played as both teams needed extra matches to find competition for both squads. Kati Kukuras and Gemma Garcia defeated Carlota Casasampere and Sadaf Sadeghvaziri by a score of 6-4, while Sadeghvaziri fell in singles to the Toreros' Sophia Chow 6-2, 6-2.
Competition continues at the Rhodes Tennis Center through Sunday, with doubles play kicking off the action Saturday at Noon.
