Career-Efforts by Spriggs, Kirst Lift Long Beach State Over Princeton

Spriggs and Harward collect double-doubles, while Kirst posts 10 blocks in five-set win

TOWSON, Md. – Tyler Spriggs and Hailey Harward each notched double-double performances and Emma Kirst posted a career-high 10 blocks as the Long Beach State women's volleyball team came away with a 3-2 [15-25, 25-19, 26-24, 14-25, 15-8] win over Princeton on Thursday at the Towson Invitational.
Long Beach State improved to 5-4 with the win, while Princeton dropped to 3-1, as the Beach handed the Tigers their first loss of the year.
Spriggs led the Beach with 18 kills and 16 digs on .366 hitting (18-3-41). Her 18 kills is a new season-high, while her 16 digs is a new career-high for the senior. Joining Spriggs with a double-double of her own was Harward who tallied 10 kills and 13 digs.
Kirst had a career day at the net as she tallied a total of 10 blocks (one block solo and nine block assists) to lead the Beach defense. Long Beach State was solid at the net as the squad totaled 12.0 team blocks. In addition to Kirst's stout effort, Harward added four blocks, while Carly Aigner-Swesey registered three, while Spriggs and Mina Andjelkovic each notched two.
Aigner-Swesey and Andjelkovic paced the Long Beach State offense as the duo combined for 42 assists in the match. Aigner-Swesey dished out 31 assists, while adding nine digs for another solid outing for the freshman.
Princeton took the first set by a score of 25-15 as Long Beach State struggled in the opening frame. However, the Beach were unfazed as they bounced back and won the second set, 25-19. In that game, LBSU hit .279 to Princeton's .172.
Long Beach State had its best offensive showing in the third set as the Beach hit .310 (18-5-42) and battled the Tigers through 14 ties and 10 lead changes. LBSU fell behind 24-23 as Princeton pushed it to set point, but the Beach battled back and scored three-straight points on kills by Kashauna Williams, Kirst and Spriggs to win the game, 26-24.
Leading two sets to one, Long Beach State suffered a setback in the fourth set as Princeton cruised to a 25-14 win to force a fifth and deciding set.
The Beach opened the fifth set with back-to-back points and never trailed as LBSU jumped out in front, 7-3 forcing a Princeton timeout. The break in action did little to stop the Beach as they pushed their lead up to six (12-6). Long Beach State used a .280 attack percentage and forced Princeton into a negative hitting percentage (-.083) as the Beach claimed the fifth set, 15-8.
Long Beach State will be back in action on Friday when the Beach go up against Towson at 10 a.m.
